This week we know what teams have advanced to the Final Four of the NCAA Tournament we move on to our second round in our Beer Madness 2013. Congratulations to to Michigan, Syracuse, Wichita State, and Louisville for making it to the Final Four. We here at the Beer Friends would like to wish Kevin Ware a speedy recovery, it was reported yesterday that he was up and walking around on crutches which is great news after his injury this past weekend.
We know why you’ve come here today, just sit back and let us plan your week of beer swigging events…
Monday August 20th -
Murray’s Cheese is a locals favorite of most New Yorkers – legendary on Bleecker, I recently had a true New Yorker get so excited that “Murray’s now sells beer!” As if the craft beer revolution was now official in his mind. Well, those of us who’ve been following for quite some time welcome Murray’s Cheese to the table and let’s see what they got! On Monday, August 20th, Murray’s Cheese pairs with the Shelton Brothers to present “Belgian Beers and Cheese” – the problem is (with Murray’s being new to the craft beer scene – we’re very cheap) it’s $75 to get in and availability is limited (10 seats for this class).
Last week we took a week off – mainly because we were deep in the Beer Friends Vault searching for a gem of a video. This weeks video was recorded quite some time ago for Victory’s Hop Devil. A good beer in it’s own right – however a certain Beer Friend purchased a six pack that was all over a year expired. This was the first of many Beer Friend Fails. Please be kind – we were still green under the ears, getting our feet wet, and all those other excuses for purchasing AND reviewing a year old beer. We’ve learned from our mistakes and just don’t record the expired beers we drink anymore. Victory! Reading Labels! Drink by date!
What a kick-off weekend! The Beer Friends enjoyed quite a bit of craft beer this weekend in honor of the 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week. Rattle n’ Hum threw a great Barrier and Greenport bash Friday night, the Smuttynose pouring at Mudville on Saturday was fantastic (especially that Homunculus) and we’re still not sure which is better – the Concoction or the Penicillin that we tasted on Sunday.
Because there is so much to do this week and weekend, we’re going to be breaking up the Beer Friends event listings for the week. Today we’re throwing at you the events happening from Monday to Thursday. You can then check back on Thursday for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday events – a.k.a. The Grand Finale of NYC Craft Beer Week. We’re hitting the streets, bars and breweries this week with a feverish devotion and we sure hope to see all you NYC Beer Friends out there with us!

Got a case of the Monday’s after such a fantastic craft beer fueled weekend? We understand. We also know how to help.
This weeks SPotW featured Victory Brewing Company from Downingtown, PA, however it also featured the Monkeytail Beard - a quickly rising grooming choice of gentlemen all-over. Victory is a favorite of the Beer Friends and we’ve enjoyed when they work with others. Grooming! Monkeytail! Beer themed reviews!
After an exciting first two rounds, the strong have survived. These are the premier beers of the tournament. We have strong winners in Great Divide’s Yeti Imperial Stout and last years winner, Fat Tire getting knocked off by first year Breckenridge Breweries 471 Small Batch Double IPA. Polls close on April 4th, so get out there, vote and spread the word! (more…)
The Beer Friends are curious…What was your craft brew of choice for the Big Game? Yes that’s right, the biggest sporting event of the year. And no we’re not talking about the Superbowl. We’re talking about Chris Paul’s 3rd Annual PBA Celebrity Invitational. That’s right, the biggest sports superstars (Chris Paul, Reggie Bush), recording artists (Nelly, Lil’ Wayne) and PBA atheletes (PBA = Professional Bowling Association = You wouldn’t recognize their names if I told you). Seriously though – What’d you drink for it? I think a good Smokey Stout really brings out the bowling ball black flavor. Although, going with a Belgian White Ale, maybe from Allagash, really brings out the 7-10 split. Either way, we enjoyed the big game and hope you did too. Let’s see what we have this week to celebrate your own bowling victory’s – finally breaking 100-points.
Tuesday, February 8th – Boulder Brewery Night @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:
Boulder Brewery was one of the Beer Friends favorite stops on our Colorado Brewery Tour and this Tuesday they’ll be stopping in our town, at Rattle n’ Hum, with their best selection of craft brews. The list of brews is still hidden to the public but we can only imagine that it will include our favorites Mojo IPA, Sweaty Betty Blonde, Planet Porter and Cold Hop and we can only HOPE that they will bring some Killer Penguin and Never Summer Ale. We also hope they pull the same move they did when we visited the brewery – 4 oz. tasting pours of all 15 of their brews that pour regularly for $13. Let’s quickly do the math in our head on this one… 4 oz. X 15 = 60 oz. That’s roughly 4.5 brews. Will this happen in NYC on Tuesday? Beer Gods, we hope so.
Rattle n’ Hum is located at 14 E 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues.
Hello Beer Friends Nation! A few, well 3/4th of the Beer Friends are celebrating Phil’s Birthday at the ONLY Good Beer Month bar in Queens, Sunswich 3535! A very nice scene with an excellent variety… At least one Beer Friend (Phil) is gonna get sloppy! (more…)
A long, long time ago (less than a week) in a bar far, far away (about 3 subway stops) Victory Brewery held a night of epic craft beer proportions. The Blind Tiger Ale House hosted Victory Brewery last Wednesday night, 7/14/10, showcasing 20+ of their brews. Two of the beer friends made this long trek and their account of the night follows below. Enjoy! (more…)
This week we reviewed a collaboration Saison from Stone, Victory, and Dogfish Head. We also stepped it up a notch and did it in 3D – Suck it James Cameron! This is a rare bottle and well worth it if you can find it. Love Beer!
