We know why you’ve come here today, just sit back and let us plan your week of beer swigging events…
Monday August 20th -
Murray’s Cheese is a locals favorite of most New Yorkers – legendary on Bleecker, I recently had a true New Yorker get so excited that “Murray’s now sells beer!” As if the craft beer revolution was now official in his mind. Well, those of us who’ve been following for quite some time welcome Murray’s Cheese to the table and let’s see what they got! On Monday, August 20th, Murray’s Cheese pairs with the Shelton Brothers to present “Belgian Beers and Cheese” – the problem is (with Murray’s being new to the craft beer scene – we’re very cheap) it’s $75 to get in and availability is limited (10 seats for this class).
Well, after 118 reviews – we here at The Beer Friends decided to toss our hat in the ring and review one of our home brews… and suckered Greg Avola into joining us. The Beer Friends have had all different experiences with brewing – some used to brew in college and some just drank – so after a few reviews we felt it was a little unfair to judge without being judged. Enter Brooklyn Brew Shop and their awesome and easy brew kits. The first ever Beer Friends homebrew was the Everyday IPA which we messed up somehow and it tasted like vitamin water (we might have been drinking that day). The video is of our 3rd or 4th collective home brew using the Brooklyn Brew Shops kit and a little bit of our own Beer Friends touch. Home Brew! Brooklyn! Beer!
This is a very exciting day for us, and only partially due to the beer we’re reviewing! Today Greg Avola (@gregavola) of Untappd.com fame has joined “the table” to review this double IPA offering from Breckenridge Brewery. Today’s review runs a little longer but while Greg was at the table we had to get some info on him and his excellent mobile app turned iPhone/Android app – Untappd. Greg also talks about some of the recent developments at the Untappd.com offices (which I can only imagine it’s a laptop in a beer freezer) but you’re gonna have to watch to find out! Beer! Online community! Untappd!
This week we grabbed a brew from Ancient Honduras – Theobroma from Dogfish Head Brewery. This beer is part of the Ancient Ales Series which Sam Calagione (Founder and CEO) researches beers ancient roots and attempts to recreate some of these early brewing methods and recipes. Although the Beer Friends have looked at other Dogfish Head brews and Collaborations, this is the first in the Ancient Ales series of which you can drink 3 of 5 on Untappd.com and earn a badge for your efforts. Ancient Ales! Beer Rewards! Early Honduras Brew Masters!
Welcome to 2011, where everyone has a blog, makes 14 tweets a day and “there’s an app for that.” Recently the Apple App store has been filling up with “craft beer apps” that can do any number of things from find a beer on tap to give you food pairings. This is the first post in the Beer Friends App Reviews that will walk through these apps to find (trumpets) “The Ultimate Beer App!” (end fanfare.) (more…)
