New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 28, 2013

April 30, 2013

Tuesday, April 30 – Allagash Brewery @ Pony Bar UES, Manhattan:

I have long had a love affair with American brewed Belgian beer that comes from Allagash.  For some reason it just speaks to my taste buds more than other American Belgian beer or that weird stuff that actually is brewed in Belgium.  Allagash just gets what true American styled Belgian beer should taste like.  Even Phil gets close to almost appreciating the flavors he finds disgusting in all Belgian beers – almost.  Now that’s quality.  Dave Gonzalez from Allagash will be on hand with the usual good stuff and the rarest that Maine Belgian has to offer.

You might even see Phil there (ordering something else).

The Pony Bar UES is located at 1444 1st Avenue at 75th Street in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.

Wednesday, May 1 – PA Brewery Night @ Sunswick 35/35, Queens:

Nothing like a trip to Queens to visit Pennsylvania.  Although the two places couldn’t be more different, Sunswick 35/35 of Astoria will be paying tribute to all the wonderful brew PA has to offer.  Here’s the list:

Penn Brewing – Dark, Kaiser, Pils, Weizen

Stoudt’s Brewing – Double IPA, Fourplay IPA, Fat Dog Oatmeal Stout

Victory Brewing – Golden Monkey, Tripel, St. Victorious Dopplebock, Swing Spring Saison

Weyerbacher Brewing – Insanity Barrel Aged Barleywine, Last Chance IPA, Quad

Sunswick 35/35 is located at 3502 35th Street at 35th Avenue in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.

Wednesday, May 1 – Animal, Mineral, Vegetable Night @ The Stag’s Head, Manhattan:

American craft beer is known for pushing the limit.  We make Pale Ale’s that taste like IPA’s, IPA’s that taste like a punch in the face, Stouts that are brewed with chocolate and aged in bourbon barrels, barleywine’s aged in wine casks – the list goes on and on.  The next logical step was to brew beer using food.  Any type of food.  Check out this list:

Ballast Point Indra Kundra – brewed with madras curry, coconut, kaffr lime, cumin and cayenne

Abita Oyster Stout- made with pounds and pounds of oyster shells

Ommegang’s Iron Throne – brewed in honor of Game of Thrones brewed with grains of paradise and lemon peel

Elysian Malestrom – IPA brewed with blood orange

And as always, in good Stag’s Head fashion, there will be some free snacks (in the form of strawberry and cucumber gazpacho).  All this starts at 6 pm.

The Stag’s Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.

Thursday, May 2 – Oskar Blues Tap Night @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

One of the Beer Friends favorite breweries is stopping into Brooklyn’s Bierkraft this Thursday to feature their classic and rare brews.  The draft list is TBA however you should expect it to be nice and fresh – Oskar Blues recently opened a satellite brewery in North Carolina in order to keep providing the East Coast with the finest quality brew possible.  Bring your growlers and enjoy!

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Saturday, May 4 – Abita Crawfish Boil @ The Sycamore, Brooklyn:

Head on down – head on way down – as if you were going all the way to the swamp in New Orleans, but really you’re just going to the Sycamore in Brooklyn on the opposite side of Prospect Park.  It’s still pretty far, but it’s definitely worth it.  In honor of the last weekend of Jazz Fest they’ll be throwing a good ol’ fashion Bayou crawfish boil.  $25 gets you quite the large bucket of crawfish and a pint of seasonal Abita.  You can grab tickets at The Sycamore’s website.

The Sycamore is located at 1118 Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Stratford Roads in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of September 23, 2012

September 25, 2012

Tuesday, September 25 – Tuesday Night Tastings: Birrificio Bruton @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Despite our intense love for all-American craft brewing, the Beer Friends have been known to get international.  One of our favorite  event nights of recent memory was at a beer event hosted by the Italian craft brewery Collesi.  Italian beers have always gotten a bad rap here in the US and in most other parts of the world – but as with food, wine and Roman pillars, Italians are master craftsmen when it comes to beer brewing.  Birrificio Bruton boasts a focus of balance with a dedication to food pairing as the central tenets of owner Lacopo Lenci’s creation.  He’ll be there to walk you through a new viewpoint of craft brewing: Italian culture, food and life all in beer.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Street in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Wednesday, September 26 – Oktoberfest Sampling/Beer Pairings @ The Stag’s Head, Manhattan:

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of November 27, 2011

November 29, 2011

Holy Crap.  What are you doing this week?  Cancel it.  There are too many great events.  AND – the Beer Friends are bottling one of their newest creations – a holiday hopped and spiced IPA.  It’s probably a good idea not even to go to work this week.  You might miss something.

Tuesday, November 29 – Tuesday Night Tasting with Smuttynose Brewing Company @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

I told you.  Great events.  Including this one.  Head out to Brooklyn’s most notorious beer bar and store for a sampling of one of New England’s best breweries.  Smuttynose will be pouring tastes (and pints, and growlers) of Big A IPA, Gravitation, Star Island Single and Smuttanator.  The Smuttanator will be poured on cask.  The rest will be on draught with free samples.  It all will be fantastic brew.

Get there early. (more…)

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of November 6, 2011

November 7, 2011

Monday, November 7 – Vintage Three Philosophers @ Fourth Avenue Pub, Brooklyn:

Ommegang’s most famous brew will be on hand in vintage style tonight at the Fourth Avenue Pub.  Three kegs of their quadrupel, the Three Philosopher’s, have been aging nicely since 2007, 2008 and 2010.  Someone from the brewery will be around to receive your praise and admiration for this spectacular brew.  There will also be a fourth brew on hand from the Ommegang/Duvel collectioin.

The Fourth Avenue Pub is located at 76 4th Avenue between Bergen and St. Mark’s Place, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Tuesday, November 8 – Tuesday Night Tastings with Peak Organic Brewery @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Organic is a trend that has sure caught on, especially here in NYC.  However, it hasn’t become too overly popular in the craft beer world.  The limited amount of craft brewing has a lot to do with the availability of certified organic ingredients, however there are a few breweries who have made the jump.  Peak Organic is one of them and they’ll be bringing their offerings over to Bierkraft this Tuesday for the bars weekly Tasting Night.  The line-up showcases their straight forward styles which put an emphasis on traditional taste – the Amber, IPA, Fall Summit, Nut Brown and Winter Session.  Do organic ingredients really make for a tastier brew?  It’s up to you to decide.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Wednesday, November 9 – Abita Double Dog Release Party @ The Stag’s Head, Manhattan:

One would expect beer that is craft brewed in New Orleans to be over-the-top.  Double Dog by Abita is just that beer.  Normally an American strong ale of epic proportions – the 25th Anniversary Vanilla Double Dog put’s it even further over-the-top.  You can grab a taste of this rare and delicious brew at the Stag’s Head this Wednesday as well as catching a few other Abita offerings.  Don’t forget to try the free cajun snacks.

The Stag’s Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, Upper East Side, Manhattan.

Thursday, November 10 – Meet the Brewery: North Coast @ The Iron Monkey, New Jersey:

Head on over to Jersey City this Thursday for a unique event that you won’t want to miss – Northcoast Brewery will be featured at the Iron Monkey.  Fort Bragg, Califronia’s favorite brewery will be bringing their best offerings for you to try, check out this list:

North Coast Red Seal
North Coast La Merle
North Coast Pranqster
North Coast Old Rasputin
North Coast Brother Thelonious

If these brews made it to my region, I would not miss a chance to try all of them.

The Iron Monkey is located at 99 Greene Street on the corner of York Street, a short walk from the Exchange Place Path Stop, Jersey City, New Jersey.

Saturday, November 12 – Stone Brewing Company Presents: Vertical Epic 11/11/11 @ GRAB Specialty Foods, Brooklyn:

Here at the Beer Friends we appreciate the ingenuity of craft brewers everywhere.  We also appreciate it when they go batsh!t crazy.  Introducing this years 11/11/11 Vertical Epic by Stone:  “Belgian-style amber ale brewed with cinnamon and Anaheim chillis from New Mexico’s legendary Hatch Valley.”  Holy sh#t.  Seriously crazy.  Stone’s own Dennis Flynn will be on hand at GRAB to walk you through this incredibly unique beer.  As well as three other SoCal classics.  We strongly agree with GRAB’s statement “don’t forget to bring your growler.”

GRAB Specialty Foods is located at 438 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Today we’re throwing at you the events happening from Monday to Thursday. You can then check back on Thursday for the Friday, Saturday and Sunday events – a.k.a. Welcome to the 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week – The Beer Friend’s Event List

September 15, 2011

It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here! I feel like a child on Christmas (Hanukkah, Quanza or Atheist Hate-On-Everyone Day – we’re equal opportunity here) – if Christmas was 10,000 times more magical and filled with beer than it already is. The 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week has arrived! From Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 25 (Yes! I know it’s more than a week! Two extra days!) we here in NYC will be inundated, not by deluges of hurricanes or the shaky grounds of earthquakes, but floods of delicious craft beer at an incredible number of establishments – so many that you literally couldn’t commute to work each day without bumping into at least one event venue.

The NYC Craft Beer Week website has the full list of events (along with opportunities to obtain a passport with boatloads of craft beer deals) and it is immense and impressive. To help you sift through the dozens of craft beering happening each day we picked out the events that were the most intriguing, from our favorite breweries, pouring the rarest of brews and in general, a guaranteed damn good time. This edition covers the weekend on Monday. Check back in Monday morning for our take on next week’s events.

We hope you agree with our list and, as always, can’t wait to see you out there in the jungle…the 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week jungle that is!

Friday, September 16

Friday night starts the whole shebang off with a lip smackin’ range of events. Craft Beer Week Pre-Game at The Stag’s Head

September 14, 2011

Oh man, Craft Beer Week is approaching – and the Beer Friends were emailing back and forth all day about the possibilities. Questions arose: should we feature events? Should we suggest our favorites? Should we branch out and individually go to events? Should we quit our jobs, hit every event and find out happens when we wake up (hungover) in ten days. Answers will follow but for now… pregame!

Brad’s 1 – Sixpoint Mad Scientist #5: while waiting for Phil I jumped on the Sixpoint Mad Scientist series – a bit belgian-y and I can’t figure out all the flavors… Click the comment box below and share your thoughts if you’ve had it!
