New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of December 9, 2012

December 11, 2012

Tuesday, December 11 – Tuesday Night Tasting: Kelso Beer Company @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

Kelso is one of the unsung heroes of the NYC craft beer scene.  A Brooklyn based brewery that often gets overshadowed by Brooklyn’s omnipresence and Sixpoint’s artsy-edginess, Kelso still puts out a wide range of delicious craft brew.  Owner Kelly Taylor will be hosting a taking over tonight’s Tuesday Night Tastings at Bierkraft and they’ll be bringing an interesting selection that is sure to please.

Nut Brown Lager
Winter Lager
IPA
Industrial Imperial IPA
Rye-barrel-aged Tripel
Fuku (a rauchbier/witbier/gose hybrid)

There will also be a special opening of the Bierkraft 10th Anniversary Maple-liquor-barrel-aged Imperial Stout.

How’s that for overshadowed?

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Wednesday, December 12 – Stone Brewing Co. Vertical Epic – The Final Chapter 12.12.12 @ Alewife, Queens:

For the past 10 years Stone has created a brew ready to drink on the triple-repeated-date of that year (2/2/2 – 12/12/12).  Even though that brew could’ve been enjoyed anytime between then and now, they were specially developed to be aged and sipped gently (read: Devoured) on 12.12.12 – the last reincarnation of Vertical Epic until the next century (seriously, Wednesday is the last triple-repeated date until 2100 – time to celebrate!).  They’ll be serving up every Vertical Epic since 2003 alongside Ruination IPA, Smoked Porter, and Imperial Russian Stout.

Can you drink all the Stone beer at this event?  It would be vertically epic.

Alewife is located 5-14 51st Avenue between 5th Street and  Vernon Boulevard in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens.

Wednesday, December 12 – Once In 100 Years Event @ Beer Boutique Inc., Brooklyn:

Thought we were done with triple repeating dates?  Not even close. Beer Boutique Inc. of Brooklyn wants to help you celebrate by providing you with access to some of the rarest, biggest Brooklyn brewery beers of this (and the last decade of the previous) century.

Vintage Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout

The Companion
Brooklyn Blast
There Will BE Black
Beer Boutique Inc. is located at 497 Union Avenue between N 8th Street and Withers Street in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.
Thursday, December 13 – Christmas Bash @ Standings, Manhattan:
It’s not quite Christmas yet.  For that you’ll have to wait until this Thursday.  At Standings.  They’ll be pouring three of the finest Christmas ales in the land for your  holiday cheering pleasure alongside free brat’s from Wechsler’s.
Brekcenridge Christmas
Defiant Christmas
Southern Tier 2X Christmas
PLUS: Weyerbacher Last Chance IPA on Cask
Nothing says happy holidays like beer and free brat’s.
And afterwards you can head downstairs to Jimmy’s No. 43 for their Barrier “Submersible” Belgian 1 event.
Standings is located at Upstairs 43 East 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan.
Thursday, December 13 – Thursday Tap: Barrier “Submersible” Belgian 1 @ Jimmy’s No. 43, Manhattan:
Jimmy’s No. 43 has been close friends with Barrier brewing since they started brewing.  So, when Hurricane Sandy devastated their brewing processes, Jimmy’s happened to have some of the last kegs on hand and in honor of helping them get back on their feet have been slipping them into rotation one-by-one.  This Thursday they’ll be tapping the keg of their Submersible Belgian 1 – the brew in the fermenters at the time the storm hit – extra fermented by the hurricane.
This is a rare one, that you’ll probably never see again.
And afterwards you can head upstairs and hit up Standings for their Christmas bash.
Jimmy’s No. 43 is located at Downstairs 43 East 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan.

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of November 25, 2012

November 27, 2012

For some reason the beer gods have decided to grace this week with an extensively excellent selection of beer events to check out.  We picked the best six and are throwing them your way.  Try to make them all?  Sounds crazy, but you’re not a light hearted craft beer fan, you take this seriously.  So do we.  Afraid of the magnitude of it all?  Us too.

Good thing beer helps with courage.

One more thing, read this one all the way through.  We saved the best for last.

Wednesday, November 28 – Brooklyn Brewery Tap Attack with Garret Oliver @ Dive Bar NYC, Manhattan:

Remember the good ol’ days when you could just bump into Garret Oliver at a beer event as he poured you a cask aged Brooklyn Blast while you discussed the ins and outs of craft brewing in America?  Well, we do.  Brooklyn in recent times has reached super-stardom in the craft beer community, expanding their brewery and upstate brewing capacities in order to meet the demands of expanding to other cities, states, countries…and planets? (the Mars rover totally digs Mary’s Maple Porter)  We’re proud of Brooklyn but we still have fond memories of those face to face times.  If you do to, then you happen to be in luck.  This Wednesday head on up to Dive Bar NYC and meet with Garret Oliver and the Brooklyn Brand Manager Brian Duprey as they serve up an impressive selection of that delicious Brooklyn brew we’re still in love with.

November 7, 2012

After hurricanes and presidential elections we are finally back here at the Beer Friends with some excellent celebratory/wound licking events for you.

Wednesday, November 7 – Fullers Beer Night @ One Stop Beer Shop, Brooklyn:

Depending on your horse you’re either loving America this morning or severely disappointed with it. OR you’re just sick of the circus-like charade of it all. How about some of the best foreign new from the rest world to forget American politics for a minute? We think yes.

Fullers is renowned as one of the finest beer brewers in the world making everything from the darkest stouts to the hoppiest IPA’s on to the most golden of ales. They’ll be pouring a wide range of draughts and a strong selection of bottles over at One Stop Beer Shop tonight for you to enjoy.

So head on over to enjoy some nowhere-near-American-partisan brew and forget about attack ads, electoral colleges and primary colored states for a night.

The One Stop Beer Shop is located at 134 Kingsland Avenue between Beadle and Lombardy Streets in the East Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Wednesday, November 7 – Borubon Barrel Boner Night @ Double Windsor, Brooklyn:

New York Beer Events for the Week of August 20th – 25th

August 20, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

We know why you’ve come here today, just sit back and let us plan your week of beer swigging events…

Monday August 20th -

Murray’s Cheese is a locals favorite of most New Yorkers – legendary on Bleecker, I recently had a true New Yorker get so excited that “Murray’s now sells beer!” As if the craft beer revolution was now official in his mind.  Well, those of us who’ve been following for quite some time welcome Murray’s Cheese to the table and let’s see what they got!  On Monday, August 20th, Murray’s Cheese pairs with the Shelton Brothers to present “Belgian Beers and Cheese” – the problem is (with Murray’s being new to the craft beer scene – we’re very cheap) it’s $75 to get in and availability is limited (10 seats for this class).

Murray’s Cheese is located at 254 Bleecker St., New York, NY

Tuesday August 21st -

Tuesday, August 7 – Founders Brewery Night @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

Last year Founders took the city by storm, this year they are an established leader in the craft beer world.  Just cause they’re easier to find these days doesn’t mean that we don’t still seek them out in all corners of the world and  Rattle n’ Hum is making it easy as pie to find them tonight.  Stop in for a Founders extravaganza.  Here’s the list:

Founders Cenntenial
Founders Porter
Founders 111pa
Founders CBS
Founders KBS
Founders Breakfast Stout
Founders Cerise

Rattle n’ Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues in the Midtown neighborhood of Manhattan.

February 20, 2012

Tuesday, February 21 – Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve Night @ Mission Dolores, Brooklyn:

Brooklyn Brewery’s main line of beers sticks mostly to old world, traditional styles.  Easily drinkable beer with nothing over-the-top.  Something you can always count on being delicious to almost any group of people.  Their Brewmasters Reserve collection?  Out of control.  In the best way.  They will be bringing the whole entourage of brewmaster brews as well as some surprises.

2009 Monster Ale
AMA Bionda
2007 Black Chocolate Stout
Radius
Concoction
Mary’s Maple Porter
Sorachi Ace
Winter Ale
Blast

After reading that I am actually a bit afraid to find out what the “special surprises” are going to be.  (more…)

August 23, 2011

Wednesday, August 24 – Beer and Lobster Fest @ David Copperfield’s, Manhattan:

Head on up to the Upper East tomorrow for a chance to snag a delicious deal – lobster, corn on the cob for a $1.  They have 30 lines of craft beer for you to pair with the lobster.  After our New England Brewery Tour we’d suggest an English style IPA.  And since the lobster is only a dollar, you can try pairing over, and over, and over, and over…  Enough said.

David Copperfield’s is located at 1394 York Avenue between 74th and 75th Streets, Upper East Side, Manhattan.

Wednesday, August 24 – Beer Club Night @ The Bronx Ale House, The Bronx:

Here’s another reason to head up to the Bronx – that often avoided borough that deserves more respect than most New Yorker’s give it.  The Bronx Ale House, arguably the Bronx’s only craft beer bar, has started a “Beer Club.” Similar to a few other beer club’s in New York, however while other craft beer bars only reward you once you reach 100 beers the Bronx Ale House rewards you at different points along the way AND once you get to 100 you get quite the package – your name engraved on their wall of fame, a Bronx Ale House t-shirt, a personalized growler which gets you discounted growler fills and %50 off every Wednesday night.  That’s where tomorrow comes in.  You might not be a Gold Member, or any kind of member yet, but tomorrow is a good a day as any to start.

The Bronx Ale House is located at 216 West 238th Street between Broadway and Putnam Avenue, Riverdale, The Bronx.

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of July 3, 2011

July 4, 2011

We definitely have a reason to celebrate this weekend.  Actually, two reasons.

First, we celebrate the great country we live in.  A country, that sense its beginning has encouraged ingenuity and creativity among its citizens.  It’s that common instinct that inspires that brewers of the craft beer that we love to do what they do.  It’s why the craft beer industry has continued to be successful and grow by leaps and bounds every year. Craft Beer is as natural to America as fireworks and cookouts on the 4th of July.

We also get to celebrate craft beer itself.  As deemed by the brewers and craft beer bar owners behind The Good Beer Seal, July is Good Beer Month.  Now here at the Beer Friends believe every month should be Good Beer Month.  But we’re pretty okay with picking one out and giving it a name.  So tomorrow, while your cooking out and watching the fireworks, raise your glass of your favorite brew in a toast to craft beer and to America, the country that not only allows craft beer to exist, but inspires it’s incredible and delicious diversity.

Enjoy the events:

Tuesday, July 5 – The Big Le-Brewski Event: Part 2 @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

Sit down.  If you’re sitting – get closer to the ground.  I’m about to unload every craft beer lovers dream on you.  Imagine (more…)

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of June 12, 2011

June 13, 2011

I had a feeling.  And not just the usual feelings, but the awesome feelings.  The sort of feelings that let you know this is going to be a big week.  A HUGE week.  Seriously though, the closest example I would give for the events happening this week would be a planetary alignment with the center of the galaxy.  It wasn’t organized by anything beyond cosmic happenstance but despite it’s coincidental nature, it’s pretty damn awesome.  Well, this week you can thank The Beer Friends for taking the random alignment of super-awesome craft beer events and organizing them into a coherent list of what you should drink and where you should drink it.  Let’s see what we’ve got…

Tuesday, June 14 – The Good Beer Seal 2011 Awards Party @ Barcade, Brooklyn:

Ever had the urge to share your opinion regarding all things craft beer in the New York City metro area?  But didn’t feel like being as verbose as creating a blog on the internet?  Now here at The Beer Friends we don’t really know about such things.  However, we do know about a more concise method of expressing your expert craft beer opinions.  And it’s happening this week.

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 17

April 18, 2011

Hello all you Beer Friends out there!  I’m sure by now you have all heard that Nebraska Brunette Nut Brown is the 2011 Beer Friends Final Four Champion! Congratulations Nebraska!  It was an amazing tournament this year but if you’re anything like me then you’ve been wandering around aimlessly, trying to find something to fill the void now that it’s over.  I have just the thing for you:  Sours, Kegs n Eggs, Evil Twins, Breakfast Stouts from Kentucky and a Cask Beer Festival in Brooklyn.

I think that should do the trick…

Tuesday, April 19 – $10 Tuesday Tastings ‘April Sours’ @ Jimmy’s No. 43, Manhattan:

April Sours bring May Flowers?  I think so, but you won’t have to wait until may to get those flowers.  Jimmy’s No. 43 is offering a selection of sours to sample this Tuesday night as part of their weekly $10 Tuesday Tastings series.  Sours are (more…)
