New York Beer Events for the Week of August 20th – 25th

August 20, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

We know why you’ve come here today, just sit back and let us plan your week of beer swigging events…

Monday August 20th -

Murray’s Cheese is a locals favorite of most New Yorkers – legendary on Bleecker, I recently had a true New Yorker get so excited that “Murray’s now sells beer!” As if the craft beer revolution was now official in his mind.  Well, those of us who’ve been following for quite some time welcome Murray’s Cheese to the table and let’s see what they got!  On Monday, August 20th, Murray’s Cheese pairs with the Shelton Brothers to present “Belgian Beers and Cheese” – the problem is (with Murray’s being new to the craft beer scene – we’re very cheap) it’s $75 to get in and availability is limited (10 seats for this class).

Murray’s Cheese is located at 254 Bleecker St., New York, NY

Tuesday August 21st -

Beer Review 87: Southern Tier Pumking

October 25, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

To follow up last weeks Pumpkin brew review… we did another!  This week we featured Southern Tier‘s Pumking, which if you are in the NYC and upstate area and into craft beer – you’ve heard of.  This is a intense pumpkin beer with spices and a smell that won’t stop.  We also reviewed Southern Tier in honor of the Southern Tier Night Event at The Pony Bar – one of the Beer Friends favorite saloons.  Grab some Pumking, hit the Pony Bar Event – and celebrate everything Upstate NY has to offer!  Pumpkin! Events! Beer!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of October 23, 2011

October 24, 2011

Tuesday, October 25 – Southern Tier Night @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan:

Here’s an event you won’t want to miss:  Southern Tier’s first brewery event at the Pony Bar.  They’ll be bringing the best, the biggest and the rarest of their brews.  We’re talking hoppy oak age Imperial IPA’s, Phin and Matt’s Extraordinary Ale and some high alcohol, rare bottles that will be mysteriously popping up around the bar.  If you’re lucky one might pop up next to you.

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avenue on the Northwest Corner of West 45th Street, Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan. (more…)

Hashtag Battles Week Six!

October 16, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What’s a hashtag battle? When you’re drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#stone vs #newbelgium), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we’ll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. And because football needs beer, we’re starting on Saturday morning to include the brews consumed during College Football Saturdays. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Hashtag Battle Week Five Matchup: Buffalo vs NY Giants (#southerntier vs #riverhorse)

Buffalo is the Darling of the NFL.  A great storyline with victories then a slight hiccup in week 4 but back on track in week 5 against the “Dream Team” (currently the 1-4 Eagles).  With the Jets struggling and currently owning the Tie-Breaker against the Patriots, can the Bills hold on to compete in the AFC East and turn the clock back to the 90′s?  Thurman Thomas where are you?!?!  Southern Tier is a big brewery producing quality brews.  In fact they are bring their quality brews down to the Pony Bar later in October.  Southern Tier is on the rise and the Buffalo Bills are on the rise again – all this sunshine might be enough to melt some of that year round snow in Upstate New York!

The Giants are always a question mark.  Living in New York you can never get the real story on ANYTHING going on with the teams.  A first week lost to NFC rival Washington and everyone is questioning Eli, three straight wins and “The Giants are going to the Superbowl!” and a loss (at home) to Seattle and Tom Coughlin has to go.  While the Giants and their media might be slightly bi-polar, the brewing at River Horse continues to impress.  River Horse has constantly impressed with the Beer Friends and helped us produce one of our favorite reviews ever.  Even recently the Beer Friends found a Hipp-O-Lantern aged in a Bourbon barrel that was dynamite! Maybe River Horse can up production, hand a few to the coaching staff and NY media and everyone can have a good time, until they lose again and then heads will roll…

NYC Craft Beer Events – Week of 10/10 – 10/16

October 11, 2010

Hey all you Beer Friends out there!  Let’s see what’s happening beer wise in this great metropolis of ours throughout this upcoming week.

Monday, October 11 – Troeg’s Tasting Event @ Amity Hall, Manhattan: Amity Hall is the place you go to when your nosing around Washington Square Park with your friends that are visiting the city and wanted to see Washington Square Park and then want beer.  You know it’s there, you might not head to an NYU neighborhood regularly, but today you know that you will not take your friends to a light beer bar on Bleecker, but you will take them to a good craft beer bar on West 3rd.  If all this happens to be happening tonight, Monday, October 11, then you will be in for a treat:  Troeg’s Tasting Event.  Troeg’s is a fantastic brewery from outside of Philadelphia.  So after your friends have taken their respective pictures in front of the newly aligned fountain in Washington Square, bring them to Amity Hall, head upstairs and drink Troeg’s. They’ll thank you for saving them from tourist dogma.

Tuesday, October 12 – I Love NY Beer Week: Captain Lawrence Night @ The Spring Lounge, Manhattan: The Spring Lounge is a great beer bar that borders the entrance to Little Italy, a.k.a. many New Yorkers Tourist Nightmare (seems to be a theme today actually).  However, you are not in Little Italy, nobody is throwing pasta at you and I promise you only have to choose 3 different flavors of gelato if you want to.  The Spring Lounge is spending the week appreciating New York Breweries, from all over the state, starting with Captain Lawrence out of Kingston, NY.  Come on by and grab some Westchester Pale Ale, Brown Bird Brown and Liquid Gold.  And if you want, you can head over to Little Italy and get some gelato on your way out.  You can even choose 3 flavors for the same price.  If you want to.

Get Real NY Cask Ale and Food Festival Recap

September 30, 2010

Last Saturday Get Real NY threw an epic bash that will sure to be remembered in cask ale history. The Get Real NY Cask Ale and Food Festival was held at the spectacular space in the Altman Building on 18th street between 6th and 7th in the Chelsea Neighborhood of Manhattan. Craft Beer Week banners hung from the outside of the building and there were happy cask alers milling about, at once this Beer Friend knew he was at a friendly place. Upon entering I was given a list of the featured cask ales and food, a NYC Craft Beer Week passport AND a commemorative glass. As well as unlimited access to all the craft beer and NYC featured food that I could eat. To say that I was exhilarated here would be an understatement.

Recap of Southern Tier Night at Rattle n’ Hum

July 21, 2010

The Beer Friends lucked out big-time yesterday. The Good Beer Seal, who are the beloved organizers of NYC Good Beer Month, reported that Rattle n’ Hum would be having an Allagash event on Tuesday, July 20th. However, they were mistaken, and what a great mistake it was. They were actually having a Southern Tier night! Not that we don’t like Allagash (we very much like Allagash) but we LOVE Southern Tier and their hopheaded creations. That being said, here’s a recap of the (several) brews we enjoyed! (more…)
