BFF4 2013! NY/CA Round 1

March 28, 2013

We head into our fourth and final region in round 1.  This region highlights the region that The Beer Friends reside.  We have done a lot of New York breweries here due to the abundant availability here in NYC. We also thought they matched up with some of the great California brews that we have done. Voting will end on Friday, Round 2 to start early next week.

Make sure you cast your vote in the East, Midwest, and West region. If you need some help deciding you can click on the links to each video for our “expert” opinion. If you’d like to tell us why one of these beers should win over the other you can tweet us @thebeerfriends, it won’t help that beer win any but we’ll enjoy it.

New York Beer Events for the Week of August 20th – 25th

August 20, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

We know why you’ve come here today, just sit back and let us plan your week of beer swigging events…

Monday August 20th -

Murray’s Cheese is a locals favorite of most New Yorkers – legendary on Bleecker, I recently had a true New Yorker get so excited that “Murray’s now sells beer!” As if the craft beer revolution was now official in his mind.  Well, those of us who’ve been following for quite some time welcome Murray’s Cheese to the table and let’s see what they got!  On Monday, August 20th, Murray’s Cheese pairs with the Shelton Brothers to present “Belgian Beers and Cheese” – the problem is (with Murray’s being new to the craft beer scene – we’re very cheap) it’s $75 to get in and availability is limited (10 seats for this class).

Murray’s Cheese is located at 254 Bleecker St., New York, NY

Tuesday August 21st -

Welcome to the 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week – The Beer Friend’s Event List

September 15, 2011

It’s here! It’s here! It’s here! It’s finally here! I feel like a child on Christmas (Hanukkah, Quanza or Atheist Hate-On-Everyone Day – we’re equal opportunity here) – if Christmas was 10,000 times more magical and filled with beer than it already is. The 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week has arrived! From Friday, September 16 to Sunday, September 25 (Yes! I know it’s more than a week! Two extra days!) we here in NYC will be inundated, not by deluges of hurricanes or the shaky grounds of earthquakes, but floods of delicious craft beer at an incredible number of establishments – so many that you literally couldn’t commute to work each day without bumping into at least one event venue.

The NYC Craft Beer Week website has the full list of events (along with opportunities to obtain a passport with boatloads of craft beer deals) and it is immense and impressive. To help you sift through the dozens of craft beering happening each day we picked out the events that were the most intriguing, from our favorite breweries, pouring the rarest of brews and in general, a guaranteed damn good time. This edition covers the weekend on Monday. Check back in Monday morning for our take on next week’s events.

We hope you agree with our list and, as always, can’t wait to see you out there in the jungle…the 2011 New York City Craft Beer Week jungle that is!

Friday, September 16

Friday night starts the whole shebang off with a lip smackin’ range of events. You can choose to hit up the Official NYC Craft Beer Week opening festivity at Southpaw in Park Slope (the tickets are $50 and include a tasting glass for free tastings and some pretty kick-ass music). Check out their website and see if it’s in your sights. If tickets aren’t your flavor then check out these pay-as-you-go events:

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of May 1, 2011

May 2, 2011

May.  What a month.  Spring flowers, worker’s rights, Mexican Fives and Memorial Day.  May is like a non-stop party.  What kind of beer should we drink to start this party?  Ithaca Flower Power for the flowers? The Peoples Lager from China for May Day? Negro Modelo for Cinco de Mayo? A Southhampton Double White for Memorial Day?  You know, cause we’re all double excited to finally be able to wear white now.

Tuesday, May 3 – Pretty Things “Once Upon A Time” Launch Party @ The Rye House, Manhattan:

Ever wonder what beer tasted like in 1855?  The country was just about to be divided by civil

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 17

April 18, 2011

Hello all you Beer Friends out there!  I’m sure by now you have all heard that Nebraska Brunette Nut Brown is the 2011 Beer Friends Final Four Champion! Congratulations Nebraska!  It was an amazing tournament this year but if you’re anything like me then you’ve been wandering around aimlessly, trying to find something to fill the void now that it’s over.  I have just the thing for you:  Sours, Kegs n Eggs, Evil Twins, Breakfast Stouts from Kentucky and a Cask Beer Festival in Brooklyn.

I think that should do the trick…

Tuesday, April 19 – $10 Tuesday Tastings ‘April Sours’ @ Jimmy’s No. 43, Manhattan:

April Sours bring May Flowers?  I think so, but you won’t have to wait until may to get those flowers.  Jimmy’s No. 43 is offering a selection of sours to sample this Tuesday night as part of their weekly $10 Tuesday Tastings series.  Sours are (more…)

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 3rd

April 4, 2011

I don’t like starting the NYC Craft Beer Events post without an original theme, but this week I’m stealing ideas…from us.  I don’t know if you’ve all been keeping tabs on the Beer Friend Final Four Beer-March-Madness tournament but this year has been the craziest ever.  A #12 seed in the Northeast bracket is currently poised to take it all.  Anyone thinking VCU?  Except this VCU could actually do it.  If you haven’t voted yet then you should vote now here: http://thebeerfriends.com  I’ll come back with an original theme next week, but this week I’m plugging the Beer Friends Final Four all over the place.

In the mean time let’s see what, and where you’re drinking while you’re voting this week. (Vote here, again: http://thebeerfriends.com) (more…)

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of March 27, 2011

March 28, 2011

It’s the last week in March and it feels like nature is playing a cruel April Fools joke on us.  Hey, here’s an 80 degree day to inagurate the coming of spring…NOT! BOOM! 25 degrees and snowing! I swear, last week you could look up at the sky and see mother nature flicking you off with middle finger shaped clouds that simultaneously raining a “wintry-mix” down on us.  Jerk.  Well, this week is when April Fools Day actually happens.  My prediction?  Starts off sunny and 70 end up 20 and hailstorms the size of golf balls.  Just make sure you’re drinking your craft brews indoor. New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of 2/7/11

February 8, 2011

The Beer Friends are curious…What was your craft brew of choice for the Big Game?  Yes that’s right, the biggest sporting event of the year.  And no we’re not talking about the Superbowl.  We’re talking about Chris Paul’s 3rd Annual PBA Celebrity Invitational.  That’s right, the biggest sports superstars (Chris Paul, Reggie Bush), recording artists (Nelly, Lil’ Wayne) and PBA atheletes (PBA = Professional Bowling Association = You wouldn’t recognize their names if I told you).  Seriously though – What’d you drink for it?  I think a good Smokey Stout really brings out the bowling ball black flavor.  Although, going with a Belgian White Ale, maybe from Allagash, really brings out the 7-10 split.  Either way, we enjoyed the big game and hope you did too.  Let’s see what we have this week to celebrate your own bowling victory’s – finally breaking 100-points.

Tuesday, February 8th – Boulder Brewery Night @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

Boulder Brewery was one of the Beer Friends favorite stops on our Colorado Brewery Tour and this Tuesday they’ll be stopping in our town, at Rattle n’ Hum, with their best selection of craft brews.  The list of brews is still hidden to the public but we can only imagine that it will include our favorites Mojo IPA, Sweaty Betty Blonde, Planet Porter and Cold Hop and we can only HOPE that they will bring some Killer Penguin and Never Summer Ale.  We also hope they pull the same move they did when we visited the brewery – 4 oz. tasting pours of all 15 of their brews that pour regularly for $13.  Let’s quickly do the math in our head on this one… 4 oz. X 15 = 60 oz.  That’s roughly 4.5 brews.  Will this happen in NYC on Tuesday?  Beer Gods, we hope so.

Rattle n’ Hum is located at 14 E 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues.
