Beer Review 134: Left Hand Wake Up Dead Imperial Stout

December 3, 2012

Hello Beer Friend Nation!

Can you feel the chill in the air?  In NYC the leaves have fallen and snow is in the forecast – it’s Stout season.  Stout season is wonderful how that dark beer you avoided in the hot months, suddenly becomes the brew you reach for to warm you up.  Traditionally, stouts should be served at room temperature – but depending on how lazy your landlord is… room temperature can vary drastically.  This week we try Left Hand Brewing Company‘s Imperial Stout – Wake Up Dead.  Left Hand is a favorite (see Milk Stout below) and recently featured on hashtag battles representing the Denver Broncos.  They are a favorite because the quality brews they have and continue to impress with Sawtooth on Nitro and the Fade to Black series.  Winter!  Dark Brews!  Beer!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of May 22, 2011

May 23, 2011

Hallelujah! The Apocalypse/Judgement Day/Coolest Party Ever has been averted! Well, maybe it wasn’t ever going to happen in the first place, or maybe somebody out there prayed really hard…or the Big Guy upstairs didn’t want to end the ingenuity of American Craft Brewing just yet.  You know, just when it was starting to get good. Beer Review 47: Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout

January 19, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

With Great Divide Brewery winning awards year after year, Beer Friends had to take a second trip back – and third and forth – to sample some beers and feature them as the Six Pack of the Week.  This week we looked at Yeti Imperial Stout, a dark delicious beer that won multiple awards, most recently a 2009 Silver Medal at the Great American Beer Festival, in Denver, Colorado.  The Beer Friends got their hands on the regular Yeti Imperial Stout, but there are a few varieties including – Oak Aged, Chocolate Oak Aged, and  Espresso Oak Aged, with plenty more opinions out there.  Yeti!  I believe!  Stout!  Beer!

Sierra Nevada Blind Tiger Extravaganza Recap

August 26, 2010

Finally it has returned: The Sierra Nevada Blind Tiger Extravaganza!  One of The Beer Friends favorte breweries has come back to take over almost all of the Blind Tigers taps.  This night started as just one Beer Friend headed down to one of his favorite NYC beer bars to sample some of Sierra Nevada’s finest offerings.  It quickly turned into something bigger.  How could one man attempt to tackle so many fine offerings…by himself?  The choices were tough, but they were made.  Here’s the best attempt by one man at recapping a truly epic event.

Numero One – Southern Hemisphere Harvest Ale 6.7%
. – One of the rumors surrounding this event was that this will be one of the places that Sierra will unveil this years Harvest Ale. A fall brew from start to finish, this pour offers up hearty malts, seasonal spices reminiscent of October and a big hop character.  I could definitely see myself drinking this one or the usual Harvest that comes to us New Yorkers throughout the fall season.  It warms you, without taking away the drinkability or versatile flavors.

Pony Bar: One Year Anniversary Party

April 15, 2010

Beer Friends here giving our brief recap of a night to be remembered at our favorite watering hole, The Pony Bar.  Located in Hells Kitchen on 10th Ave and 45th Street, this craft beer bar has made quite the splash in the first year they’ve been open.  Besides getting great reviews in Time Out New York and Yelp, The Pony Bar has become one of local legend with it’s All American Club.  Drink your way through 100 beers, write them down including Beer, Brewery, date and your own personal rating and receive a awesome Dickies short sleeve button up brewmaster shirt – but wait!  There’s more!  Last night the Pony Bar was closed for a private party from 3-7p as Dan the manager and the awesome bartenders and barhops treated All American club members to 20 new pours plus sliders and wings.

Of course the Beer Friends made a trip – three of us being members in this exclusive club (we like to drink with a purpose) and here’s what our night consisted of: (more…)
