New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 28, 2013

April 30, 2013

Tuesday, April 30 – Allagash Brewery @ Pony Bar UES, Manhattan:

I have long had a love affair with American brewed Belgian beer that comes from Allagash.  For some reason it just speaks to my taste buds more than other American Belgian beer or that weird stuff that actually is brewed in Belgium.  Allagash just gets what true American styled Belgian beer should taste like.  Even Phil gets close to almost appreciating the flavors he finds disgusting in all Belgian beers – almost.  Now that’s quality.  Dave Gonzalez from Allagash will be on hand with the usual good stuff and the rarest that Maine Belgian has to offer.

You might even see Phil there (ordering something else).

The Pony Bar UES is located at 1444 1st Avenue at 75th Street in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.

Wednesday, May 1 – PA Brewery Night @ Sunswick 35/35, Queens:

Nothing like a trip to Queens to visit Pennsylvania.  Although the two places couldn’t be more different, Sunswick 35/35 of Astoria will be paying tribute to all the wonderful brew PA has to offer.  Here’s the list:

Penn Brewing – Dark, Kaiser, Pils, Weizen

Stoudt’s Brewing – Double IPA, Fourplay IPA, Fat Dog Oatmeal Stout

Victory Brewing – Golden Monkey, Tripel, St. Victorious Dopplebock, Swing Spring Saison

Weyerbacher Brewing – Insanity Barrel Aged Barleywine, Last Chance IPA, Quad

Sunswick 35/35 is located at 3502 35th Street at 35th Avenue in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.

Wednesday, May 1 – Animal, Mineral, Vegetable Night @ The Stag’s Head, Manhattan:

American craft beer is known for pushing the limit.  We make Pale Ale’s that taste like IPA’s, IPA’s that taste like a punch in the face, Stouts that are brewed with chocolate and aged in bourbon barrels, barleywine’s aged in wine casks – the list goes on and on.  The next logical step was to brew beer using food.  Any type of food.  Check out this list:

Ballast Point Indra Kundra – brewed with madras curry, coconut, kaffr lime, cumin and cayenne

Abita Oyster Stout- made with pounds and pounds of oyster shells

Ommegang’s Iron Throne – brewed in honor of Game of Thrones brewed with grains of paradise and lemon peel

Elysian Malestrom – IPA brewed with blood orange

And as always, in good Stag’s Head fashion, there will be some free snacks (in the form of strawberry and cucumber gazpacho).  All this starts at 6 pm.

The Stag’s Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.

Thursday, May 2 – Oskar Blues Tap Night @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

One of the Beer Friends favorite breweries is stopping into Brooklyn’s Bierkraft this Thursday to feature their classic and rare brews.  The draft list is TBA however you should expect it to be nice and fresh – Oskar Blues recently opened a satellite brewery in North Carolina in order to keep providing the East Coast with the finest quality brew possible.  Bring your growlers and enjoy!

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Saturday, May 4 – Abita Crawfish Boil @ The Sycamore, Brooklyn:

Head on down – head on way down – as if you were going all the way to the swamp in New Orleans, but really you’re just going to the Sycamore in Brooklyn on the opposite side of Prospect Park.  It’s still pretty far, but it’s definitely worth it.  In honor of the last weekend of Jazz Fest they’ll be throwing a good ol’ fashion Bayou crawfish boil.  $25 gets you quite the large bucket of crawfish and a pint of seasonal Abita.  You can grab tickets at The Sycamore’s website.

The Sycamore is located at 1118 Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Stratford Roads in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Hashtag Battle Week Twelve!

November 27, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What’s a hashtag battle? When you’re drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#greatdivide vs #ballastpoint), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we’ll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. We’re starting on Sunday morning so drink up – support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of September 25, 2011

September 26, 2011

Every year, like clockwork, right around this time a question comes up:  What does one do the week after NYC Craft Beer Week?  It’s a tough question.  Craft Beer Week was incredible, as always, with the Beer Friends hitting up at least one event every day.  What do we do now that there isn’t quite the dozen or so beer events to choose from every day?  Well, we’re going to help you answer that question.  There is life after NYC Craft Beer Week.  Here it is:

Tuesday, September 27 – Fermented Craft Beer Crawl @ The East Village, Manhattan:

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of August 14, 2011

August 15, 2011

It happened today – you looked at your calendar and started to get depressed.  We’ve all noticed that as of today it is the mid-point of August.  Summer is almost over – and that is a depressing thought.  We’re already starting to feel it slipping away.  It’s been an especially hard summer for Manhattanites – street temperatures in the heart of the city hitting well over 100 degrees Fahrenheit, air-conditioners keeping everyone inside cool but pumping out waves of hot air for the rest of us, concrete hot enough to cook an entire turkey and that beautiful skyline blocking any sort of breeze from giving any respite.  So this week the Beer Friends are giving Manhattan a break.

That’s right – this week every NYC Craft Beer Event is happening outside the center of New York City.  From Brooklyn, to Jersey, to Westchester (first ever I believe!) we’ve got beer events for everyone else in the Tri-State, multi-boroughed area.  Check em’ out!  And watch out for the Manhattan yuppies!

Monday, August 15 – Brooklyn Brewery “Ghost” Night @ The Diamond, Brooklyn:

Talk about black ops – this event might not even exist.  It’s the kind of thing that gets blacked out in government documents.  That shady characters with dozens of names and passports engage in only to disappear into the fold.  Some people may or may not have found some brew that may or may not exist and it may or may not be served TONIGHT at a bar that may or may not be real.   Actually, it’s all very real – there are four bottles of incredibly rare and specialized brews that sound, to be honest, made up.  Which makes them all the more desirable.  Here’s what we’re looking at:

Crochet Rouge Rose – Local 1 aged on chardonnay and pinot noir lees. (more…)

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of May 1, 2011

May 2, 2011

May.  What a month.  Spring flowers, worker’s rights, Mexican Fives and Memorial Day.  May is like a non-stop party.  What kind of beer should we drink to start this party?  Ithaca Flower Power for the flowers? The Peoples Lager from China for May Day? Negro Modelo for Cinco de Mayo? A Southhampton Double White for Memorial Day?  You know, cause we’re all double excited to finally be able to wear white now.

Tuesday, May 3 – Pretty Things “Once Upon A Time” Launch Party @ The Rye House, Manhattan:

Ever wonder what beer tasted like in 1855?  The country was just about to be divided by civil

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of 2/7/11

February 8, 2011

The Beer Friends are curious…What was your craft brew of choice for the Big Game?  Yes that’s right, the biggest sporting event of the year.  And no we’re not talking about the Superbowl.  We’re talking about Chris Paul’s 3rd Annual PBA Celebrity Invitational.  That’s right, the biggest sports superstars (Chris Paul, Reggie Bush), recording artists (Nelly, Lil’ Wayne) and PBA atheletes (PBA = Professional Bowling Association = You wouldn’t recognize their names if I told you).  Seriously though – What’d you drink for it?  I think a good Smokey Stout really brings out the bowling ball black flavor.  Although, going with a Belgian White Ale, maybe from Allagash, really brings out the 7-10 split.  Either way, we enjoyed the big game and hope you did too.  Let’s see what we have this week to celebrate your own bowling victory’s – finally breaking 100-points.

Tuesday, February 8th – Boulder Brewery Night @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

Boulder Brewery was one of the Beer Friends favorite stops on our Colorado Brewery Tour and this Tuesday they’ll be stopping in our town, at Rattle n’ Hum, with their best selection of craft brews.  The list of brews is still hidden to the public but we can only imagine that it will include our favorites Mojo IPA, Sweaty Betty Blonde, Planet Porter and Cold Hop and we can only HOPE that they will bring some Killer Penguin and Never Summer Ale.  We also hope they pull the same move they did when we visited the brewery – 4 oz. tasting pours of all 15 of their brews that pour regularly for $13.  Let’s quickly do the math in our head on this one… 4 oz. X 15 = 60 oz.  That’s roughly 4.5 brews.  Will this happen in NYC on Tuesday?  Beer Gods, we hope so.

Rattle n’ Hum is located at 14 E 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues.

Alright, bust out your studded leather jacket, your dislike for authority and your mohawk wax…it’s punk rock beer week in NYC!  Bringing back my past memories of being a punk rocker and combining them with my present interests of…well, beer, and it’s enough to get one into a headbanging, sweaty mosh-pit of life changing inspiration.  If this doesn’t kick start my quarter life crisis, well, then I don’t know what will!

Alright, here’s what you’ve been waiting for.  Break out the NOFX shirt.  Break out your skateboard.  Break out your Dead Kennedy’s discography selection and Tim Armstrong smokers voice.  It’s East Coast/West Coast Punk Rock Tour Time!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of 1/9/11

January 10, 2011

The New Years Eve hangover is finished and Craft Beer is back in full force this week in New York City.  Let’s see what kind of trouble we can get into and where we can go to get into it…

Monday, January 10 – Shmaltz Brewery Event @ The Good Beer Store, Manhattan: Shmaltz Brewery is the mastermind behind the brews from Coney Island and Hebrew.  Jeremy Cowan will be heading to the Good Beer Store in the East Village to sign copies of his book and feed you select offerings of his delicious brews.  The Good Beer Store is new to the New York City craft beer scene and it is a great place to grab a pint/flight, fill your growler or find your favorite craft bottles.  They also serve craft beer type foods – sausages, cheeses and other deliciousness.  It gets a Beer Friends stamp of approval.

The Good Beer Store is located at 422 E 9th Street between Avenue A and 1st Avenue.

Wednesday, January 12 – Troeg’s Brewery Event @ The Stag’s Head, Manhattan: Troegs is a fantastic brewery straight out of PA and they are heading straight to the Stag’s Head Wednesday evening to provide you with sustenance.  Expect the best they have to offer- think Troegenator, Hopback Amber, Nugget Nectar and Flying Mouflan.  And think about going there.  Actually, don’t just think about it – Do it.

The Stag’s Head is located at 252 E 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues.

Thursday, January 13 – Sierra Nevada Draft Takeover @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn: I believe at least one (or more) Beer Friend has been quoted as saying that Bierkraft is the best place in NYC to get your growler filled.  Now we won’t give it that official title (although it is pretty damn awesome) but it’s gotta be close.  Sierra Nevada will be taking over the taps with some regular and rare brews, including Hoptimum.  Declicious.

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets, Brooklyn.

Saturday, January 15 – Ballast Point and Two Brothers Tasting Event @ GRAB Specialty Foods, Brooklyn: Head on over to GRAB Specialty Foods in Park Slope for the newest installment of their Saturday tasting events.  Two Brothers will be bringing Cane & Ebel, Northwind Imperial Stout, and Domaine Dupage while Ballast Point will be pouring their Sculpin IPA and Calico Amber Ale.

GRAB Specialty Foods is located at 438 7th Avenue between 14th and 15th Streets, Brooklyn.

Craft Beer Week Continues – Events for the Week of 9/27-10/2

September 27, 2010

I don’t know how you all felt about the ‘opening ceremonies’ of New York City Craft Beer Week but over here at the Beer Friends we thought it was just fantastic. Ithaca had some tasty brews pouring over at the Pony Bar, the Get Real NY Cask and Food festival was for real with 80+ casks pouring and 20+ local restaurants serving up their best samples, the Staten Island beer festival had some of the Beer Friends favorite breweries on hand and saying the Atlantic Antic was antic would be an understatement. You’ll be hearing more about these events as Craft Beer Week sprints along, but for now let’s see what we have coming to us in the week ahead.
