New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of April 28, 2013

April 30, 2013

Tuesday, April 30 – Allagash Brewery @ Pony Bar UES, Manhattan:

I have long had a love affair with American brewed Belgian beer that comes from Allagash.  For some reason it just speaks to my taste buds more than other American Belgian beer or that weird stuff that actually is brewed in Belgium.  Allagash just gets what true American styled Belgian beer should taste like.  Even Phil gets close to almost appreciating the flavors he finds disgusting in all Belgian beers – almost.  Now that’s quality.  Dave Gonzalez from Allagash will be on hand with the usual good stuff and the rarest that Maine Belgian has to offer.

You might even see Phil there (ordering something else).

The Pony Bar UES is located at 1444 1st Avenue at 75th Street in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.

Wednesday, May 1 – PA Brewery Night @ Sunswick 35/35, Queens:

Nothing like a trip to Queens to visit Pennsylvania.  Although the two places couldn’t be more different, Sunswick 35/35 of Astoria will be paying tribute to all the wonderful brew PA has to offer.  Here’s the list:

Penn Brewing – Dark, Kaiser, Pils, Weizen

Stoudt’s Brewing – Double IPA, Fourplay IPA, Fat Dog Oatmeal Stout

Victory Brewing – Golden Monkey, Tripel, St. Victorious Dopplebock, Swing Spring Saison

Weyerbacher Brewing – Insanity Barrel Aged Barleywine, Last Chance IPA, Quad

Sunswick 35/35 is located at 3502 35th Street at 35th Avenue in the Astoria neighborhood of Queens.

Wednesday, May 1 – Animal, Mineral, Vegetable Night @ The Stag’s Head, Manhattan:

American craft beer is known for pushing the limit.  We make Pale Ale’s that taste like IPA’s, IPA’s that taste like a punch in the face, Stouts that are brewed with chocolate and aged in bourbon barrels, barleywine’s aged in wine casks – the list goes on and on.  The next logical step was to brew beer using food.  Any type of food.  Check out this list:

Ballast Point Indra Kundra – brewed with madras curry, coconut, kaffr lime, cumin and cayenne

Abita Oyster Stout- made with pounds and pounds of oyster shells

Ommegang’s Iron Throne – brewed in honor of Game of Thrones brewed with grains of paradise and lemon peel

Elysian Malestrom – IPA brewed with blood orange

And as always, in good Stag’s Head fashion, there will be some free snacks (in the form of strawberry and cucumber gazpacho).  All this starts at 6 pm.

The Stag’s Head is located at 252 East 51st Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues in the Upper East Side neighborhood of Manhattan.

Thursday, May 2 – Oskar Blues Tap Night @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

One of the Beer Friends favorite breweries is stopping into Brooklyn’s Bierkraft this Thursday to feature their classic and rare brews.  The draft list is TBA however you should expect it to be nice and fresh – Oskar Blues recently opened a satellite brewery in North Carolina in order to keep providing the East Coast with the finest quality brew possible.  Bring your growlers and enjoy!

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets in the Park Slope neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Saturday, May 4 – Abita Crawfish Boil @ The Sycamore, Brooklyn:

Head on down – head on way down – as if you were going all the way to the swamp in New Orleans, but really you’re just going to the Sycamore in Brooklyn on the opposite side of Prospect Park.  It’s still pretty far, but it’s definitely worth it.  In honor of the last weekend of Jazz Fest they’ll be throwing a good ol’ fashion Bayou crawfish boil.  $25 gets you quite the large bucket of crawfish and a pint of seasonal Abita.  You can grab tickets at The Sycamore’s website.

The Sycamore is located at 1118 Cortelyou Road between Westminster and Stratford Roads in the Ditmas Park neighborhood of Brooklyn.

Hashtag Battles Season 2 – Week 9!

November 4, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our second season of NFL hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What’s a hashtag battle? When you’re drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle, throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we’ll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Eight –  Philadelphia Eagles at New Orleans Saints (#yardsbeer vs #abitabeer)

This weeks “Monday Night Conversation Between Mike Tirico and Jon Gruden” features the overhyped Eagles against the disappointing Saints.  For the Eagles, last years free agent splash turned into this years “abandon ship!” and no one is safe, including the inconsistant QB who flip flops on himself in news conferences (appropriate this time of year…)  The New Orleans Saints had a disappointing season before the season even started.  With more rumors about them than in a high school lunchroom, they became the villans in the new safety first NFL, and the long contract negotiations of the Big Easy’s Chosen Son even had Saints fans wanting to march out.  Who switches their fortunes this week in hashtag battle?  Read on to find out!

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of February 19, 2012

February 20, 2012

Tuesday, February 21 – Brooklyn Brewmaster Reserve Night @ Mission Dolores, Brooklyn:

Brooklyn Brewery’s main line of beers sticks mostly to old world, traditional styles.  Easily drinkable beer with nothing over-the-top.  Something you can always count on being delicious to almost any group of people.  Their Brewmasters Reserve collection?  Out of control.  In the best way.  They will be bringing the whole entourage of brewmaster brews as well as some surprises.

2009 Monster Ale
AMA Bionda
2007 Black Chocolate Stout
Radius
Concoction
Mary’s Maple Porter
Sorachi Ace
Winter Ale
Blast

After reading that I am actually a bit afraid to find out what the “special surprises” are going to be.  (more…)

Hashtag Battles Week Two!

September 17, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles!

And because football needs beer, we’re starting on Saturday morning to include the brews consumed during College Football Saturdays. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Week Two – Chicago vs New Orleans (#twobrothersbeer vs #theabitabeer)

Chicago, the Windy City, is full of footballs in the air with Jay Cutlers arm and Mike Martz offensive scheme. They got off to a great start last week taking out Peter King’s Superbowl pick Atlanta Falcons and now continue their NFC South tour with former Superbowl Champion Saints. Chicago is also home to a few great breweries that aren’t purchased by large corporations – enter Two Brothers Brewing. Two Brothers Brewing is kept in the family by Jim and Jason Ebel and producing quality brews since 1996, will the new combo of Cutler and Martz help the old combo of Jim and Jason win this weeks Hashtag Battle?

New Orleans has been in the news for the right and wrong reasons: the horrific hurricane and the rise and rebuilding efforts of the Saints football team and more specifically Drew Brees. Abita also has it’s own rebuilding efforts with their S.O.S. Weizen Pils (Save Our Shores). So New Orleans plays the heart strings card and plays good football, produces good beer and (hopefully) wins this (very) important hashtag battle.

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of June 12, 2011

June 13, 2011

I had a feeling.  And not just the usual feelings, but the awesome feelings.  The sort of feelings that let you know this is going to be a big week.  A HUGE week.  Seriously though, the closest example I would give for the events happening this week would be a planetary alignment with the center of the galaxy.  It wasn’t organized by anything beyond cosmic happenstance but despite it’s coincidental nature, it’s pretty damn awesome.  Well, this week you can thank The Beer Friends for taking the random alignment of super-awesome craft beer events and organizing them into a coherent list of what you should drink and where you should drink it.  Let’s see what we’ve got…

Tuesday, June 14 – The Good Beer Seal 2011 Awards Party @ Barcade, Brooklyn:

Ever had the urge to share your opinion regarding all things craft beer in the New York City metro area?  But didn’t feel like being as verbose as creating a blog on the internet?  Now here at The Beer Friends we don’t really know about such things.  However, we do know about a more concise method of expressing your expert craft beer opinions.  And it’s happening this week.

Great Beer Events in NYC Week of 9/5 -9/11

September 7, 2010

Hey all you craft beer lovers out there!  We here at the Beer Friends as usual are bringing you your weekly beer events.  School’s back in session and what a great way to celebrate sending off the kids than with some good ol’ craft brews.  Come have a few with us at these great NYC brew events.

Tuesday, September 7 – Back To School Night with Sixpoint Craft Ale @ The Stag’s Head: We got a huge event for you with this one, especially if you’re one of NYC’s Smartest – Public School Teacher’s that is.  The Stag’s Head, 51st street between 2nd and 3rd, is throwing a back to school bash for teachers and non-teachers alike.  Sixpoint will be taking control of 8 draft lines.  8!  If you know how many brews Sixpoint regularly produces, then you know that this is almost all of
their continuous selection.  We’re talking Sweet Action, Righteous Rye, Bengali Tiger, Brownstone, Redd, Otis and who knows what else!  Maybe you’ll even get a chance to try their new fall brew Pumpkin-brewster.  Great name.  Also, they are honoring those public school teacher’s with a $1 off everything with a DOE ID.  AND if you’re good at poetry then take a chance by writing a poem or haiku about your favorite Sixpoint craft ale for a $50 bar tab.  As far as I’m concerned, the only thing you need for Back-To-School is a Sixpoint Craft Ale!

Wednesday, September 8th – IPA Week @ The Double Windsor: The Double Windsor is celebrating their last week before their 1st birthday by declaring it IPA week!  You know one Beer Friend who loves IPA’s and this has definitely sparked his interest!  They will be featuring mostly American IPA’s but you’ll be lucky enough to find some from across-the-pond as well.  They haven’t released a list yet, which is kind of exciting in all it’s mysteriuosness.  The only way to shed some light on the issue is to head down to Park Slope and check it out yourself.  Did I mention that this week all the beers are $5?  This mystery just got good.

The Double Windsor is located at 210 Prospect Park West @ 16th Street.  Take the F or the G to 15th street/Prospect Park.

Thursday, September 9 – Abita NFL Kickoff Party @ Standings: Standings comes through again as one of the best craft brew sports bars in the city.  The Vikings and the Saints are going head-to-head in the first NFL game of the season and Standings is throwing up a bunch of lines of Louisiana’s favorite craft brew:  Abita.  Find Satsuma Wit, Andy Gator and Turbodog along with a few others.  You can also find free pizza.  Standings loves free pizza.  So do I.  And football.  And craft beer.  What a good relationship we all have.

Hope to see you all out at the bars!  As always, if you’re the first find us then we’ll buy ya a craft brew…or two.
