March 27, 2011Second round! but first….RECAP! No real first round surprises here: Torpedo came out on top of Fire Rock Pale ale, not shocker for the 1 Seed. Deschutes Black Butte put in a good fight against Hop Stoopid, only being bested in the last minute by 1. Despite my personal prejudice Collaboration Saison won out against the Widmer Bros Drop Top, and Stone’s Arrogant Bastard came out ahead of Anchor’s Christmas Ale. Sierra Nevada Estate Ale bested the higher seated Dos Equis Amber and Rogue’s Shakespeare Stout won the battle against Green Flash’s West Coast IPA. Finishing out the first round Kona Pipeling Porter beat it’s California cousin Lagunitas Censored Red.
For our first match we have 1 vs 8 Sierra Nevada Torpedo against Lagunitas Hop Stoopid. The first of our possible Super Hopped rounds, this one will come down to which of these has the better set of hops to beat up your taste buds! (more…)
BFF4 – Phil’s Bracket: First Round
March 23, 2011What’s up everyone time to get the Western Bracket for the 2011 Beer Friends Final 4 up and running!
This year Phil’s bracket has contenders from Oregon(of course), California, Hawaii, and a surprise showing from Mexico! Make sure your vote counts, check back often and get your friends to support your favorite beers in all four brackets all the way to the Final Round!
The first match up is our 1 vs 16 with Sierra Nevada’s Torpedo going head to head with Kona Brewery’s Fire Rock Pale Ale. A good showing from both, but I’d have to side with the Torpedo, alot more flavor even with the Hops kick has enough in my opinion to unseat the standard flavored Fire Rock. A Heineken I would buy in a hearbeat!

Gizmodo.com has found it again! Apparently the stockholders for Heineken got this snazzy little bottle and case just for being who they are!
According to Gizmodo, who found this little gem through Iris and Freedom of Creation, the case has a UV light that triggers when you open it, giving it that futuristic glow.
I know it’s too bad that it’s Heineken, but hey I personally think it’s a few steps ahead of putting your beer inside a dead animal.
I’d buy it in a heartbeat, for the mantle, not to drink.

All Signs Point to Beer

Our good friends over at Uncrate.com have found us another great piece of flair for your basement bar wall.
A tastefully designed sign from a craftsman over at Etsy.com, it lists the major types of beer so you can point to them with your lab coat on while you explain to your other friends what kind of beer they are consuming.
Whatever way you decide to show this piece off, it’s still better looking than the 6 pieces of printer paper and crayons you used to your last beer type sign.

To that end when we find a useful tool to assist us in our homebrewing efforts we can’t help but pass it along.
Previously we found a great little application for your iPad called iBrewmaster, reviewed earlier here.
But what if you don’t have an iPad or iPhone? Fear not, Todd Gehman over at Hopville.com has just the thing for you with his Beer Calculus Homebrew Recipe Calculator.
Its a web-based recipe calculator that allows you to tweak all of your homebrew’s parameters all the while estimating the final color and taste! The best part is after tweaking everything on the fly to get that perfect virtual brew with all your hops and malts and what not, it helps calculate the boil times, fermentation period and bottle conditioning times.
A great help for anyone looking to streamline their process.

The Weirdest Beers in the World

So you think the last time you went to the bar and had a beer that included the word “Imperial”, “Wet”, or “Torpedo” was having a weird beer?
Think again.
Our friends over at MadeMan.com have compiled a list of 10 Beers that they think are the weirdest in the world.
A few of them we have already had, and were quite tasty I might add, but the rest sure are an interesting bunch.
The weirdest in my opinion is the Beer Geek Brunch beer, from the same animal origin as the super special coffee that a certain rodent digests for us.
My vote for the one I want to try the most: Pizza Beer, might be the only one giving Guiness a run for its money in the Meal-In-A-Can category.

bottle opener watch

Time and time again we have all found ourselves without a bottle opener in a time of need. What ever shall we do? Bottle Opener Belt Buckle you say? I don’t have any belt loops. Key chain? I left my keys at the beach house.
The Answer?
Two styles of watches are offered: The first, pictures to the left, is the “Dark ‘N’ Stormy” and the “Bottoms Up”.
Bottoms Up is a bit more expensive, but lets you choose from a few colors of watch face and band and is a touch more modern style.
The Dark ‘N’ Stormy is my personal choice, a bit cheaper and the Retro styling looks better, but to each their own. Having an opener at hand at all times while looking this good is worth a look.
