Hello Beer Friends Nation!
In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our second season of NFL hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!
What’s a hashtag battle? When you’re drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle, throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we’ll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!
Week Two – Tampa Bay Bucs at New York Giants (#cigarcitybeer vs #sixpoint)
Well, hopefully that week and a half off was long enough to give Giants’ fans faith in football again. The NY media took the loss well (sarcasm) but haven’t called for two-time World Champion coach Tom Coughlin to be fired… yet. The G-Men are like a college team with the NY media playing the role of nervous boosters. Even when they win it might not be enough. But the defending Super Bowl champions aren’t about to freak out. It’s a long season and even though their boosters aren’t thrilled with the “weak” one performance, at least they don’t make the back page as often as that party school with a NY logo (everyone needs a safety school right?). Just wait until Mark Sanchez plays like, well, Mark Sanchez rather than Tom Brady — the NY Giants won’t have to worry about the media at all. The “TEBOW, TEBOW, TEBOW” will be heard all the way back at USC.
Sixpoint Craft Ales has grown up right in front of our face. Remember when you could only find them on draft at a few local craft beer bars, then Sweet Action started showing up everywhere. Then came cans, seasonals, double IPA’s, nanokeg holders and next, the WORLD! Sixpoint has always been a favorite (we try to review all their stuff and usually gush like a sophomore girl talking to the Senior QB) and we are excited to watch its continued growth, with hopefully no Page 6 drama!
For the Tampa Bay Bucs, it was a tough three years. When the team hired young Raheem Morris, they became a hot pick, with an energetic coach, Bill Simmons’s boyfriend Josh Freeman at QB, and an MMA running back, while playing in the always-in-flux NFC South. The Bucs hopes flew high with a 10-6 record in 2010, finishing just outside of the playoffs. But by the end of 2011, it was a team with no identity that quit on its coach. That cute, young talented team experienced a slump worse than Oasis (still the greatest band British band since the Beatles!) and ended at the bottom of the NFC South with a 4-12 record. Now, hope springs eternal. A new coach and a big free agent WR (the University of Northern Colorado’s single greatest athlete) lead the charge and with a scary defensive line the Bucs looked poised for a turn around reminiscent of coach Greg Schiano’s last job at Rutgers. I can’t wait until the Bucs start scheduling Pittsburgh for their homecoming game.
Cigar City is a dynamite brewery who just invaded The Pony Bar in Hell’s Kitchen. With a solid IPA in Jai Alai (which I have enjoyed many times this week), the brewery experiments with different aging processes and every one turns out fantastic. Add Maduro Brown, a delicious malt beverage, aged with Vanilla and a Cucumber Saison – I’m in love. Maybe the solid basic recipe (run game) and a little aging (maturity) is just the answer for a successful franchise.
Let the battle begin! Tag with #cigarcitybeer #sixpoint, the battle begins Sunday morning and ends Monday night… drink to support your teams!
