Tuesday, July 24 – $10 Tuesday Tastings: Lagunitas @ Jimmy’s No. 43, Manhattan:

Tonight’s installment of what Time Out New York calls one of the best deals for a weeknight is featuring one of California’s most prominent and creative breweries: Lagunitas. Brewers of a hop-tastic IPA, refreshing Pilsner and hush hush Censored Copper Ale that can be found nation-wide also brews a line of intensely creative smaller batches – Lil’ Sumpin’ Sumpin’, Wilco Tango Foxtrot and Brown Sugga. Also famous for their delicious winter seasonal mess-up – where they realized far too late that they couldn’t produce their winter brew and their regular line ups with their current brewing capacity, so instead brewed a winter IPA and named it “Lagunitas Sucks” in apology. Tonight you will get learned on all this as the beer experts at Jimmy’s walk you through a tasting of these legendary brews. (more…)

Beer Review 120: Cape Cod Beer 1000th Batch Imperial Red

July 24, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

It’s no surprise or secret that the Beer Friends love Cape Cod Beer.  We’ve reviewed some of their stuff in the past (Cape Cod Beer RedStargazer Stout) and we’ve been fortunate to sit down with Beth, the Business Manager and talk about their story a little (which you’ll see in the upcoming days/weeks).  Today we reviewed the 1000th Batch which Cape Cod Beer decided was going to be a Imperial Red.  After 1000 batches this beer/beer company continues to impress and we’re all excited for the next 1000.  Imperial Red!  1000 Batches!  Cape Cod Beer!

P.S. – Sorry about the Auto-focusing and light adjustments – using new equipment.

Beer Review 119: Brooklyn Brew Shop/Beer Friends Oaked Chocolate Porter

July 17, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

Well, after 118 reviews – we here at The Beer Friends decided to toss our hat in the ring and review one of our home brews… and suckered Greg Avola into joining us.  The Beer Friends have had all different experiences with brewing – some used to brew in college and some just drank – so after a few reviews we felt it was a little unfair to judge without being judged.  Enter Brooklyn Brew Shop and their awesome and easy brew kits.  The first ever Beer Friends homebrew was the Everyday IPA which we messed up somehow and it tasted like vitamin water (we might have been drinking that day).  The video is of our 3rd or 4th collective home brew using the Brooklyn Brew Shops kit and a little bit of our own Beer Friends touch.  Home Brew!  Brooklyn!  Beer!

Monday, July 16 – Hopfest: Backyard Hops @ The Brooklyn Brewery, Brooklyn:

We’re starting the events of the week a bit early this week for one very hoppy reason:  Hopefest: Backyard Hops at the Brooklyn Brewery.  Stop by the Brooklyn Brewery tonight for a beery educational event that any self-respecting hop-head would not want to miss.  Hops are the ingredient in beer that give it a range of delicious flavors – from bitter to citrus to pine to resin to floral.  Relatives to cannabis, these precious flowering plants are usually grown in large farms that straddle certain climate zones.  However, recently there has a been a large push in the craft beer community to grow your own hops on premises.  This has become so popular that even home-brewers are hopping up their gardens in order to create a more organic, homemade brew.

Hopfest: Backyard Hops showcases these homemade brewers and hop growers by highlighting some of the foremost hop growers in New York City.  These brewers are so dedicated to their craft that they are squeezing greenery out of what little apartment/yard space this urban jungle throws at them in order to produce homemade ingredients.  The event will provide an interesting look into growing hops in NYC including – how to’s, what hops to grow,  demonstrations and tastings of local brews made with backyard hops.

Beer Review 118: New Belgium 1554

July 10, 2012

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

Ah New Belgium, probably the biggest brewery that isn’t in New York City.  Well the Beer Friends turned out to be pretty resourceful and have been able to review a few beers (Fat TireBelgoDig) and today we check out 1554, an enlightened black ale.  1554 is a Belgian black ale that was a test and see project (darn, have to do a bunch of in-house tasting!) that started in 1997 and was good enough that it’s a year round today.  This rounds out the Amber (Fat Tire), Belgian IPA (Belgo), Spring (Dig) and Black Ale of styles we tried from New Belgium – so far… Belgium! Black Ales! Roasted Malts!
