BFF4: Blue Bracket Round 2

March 31, 2012

The next Round 2 bracket voting coincides with the NCAA Final four match ups.  It is purely coincidental that the voting for the Blue bracket opens and that I have Kansas and Kentucky winning tonight.

The # 1 seed in this bracket Founders Canadian Breakfast Stout is definitely one of the favorites to win this entire tournament but the road will not be easy.  It’s second round match up is #9 seed Ballast Point Sculpin IPA and it will not go away quietly.  This is a great Round 2 match up that could change the face of the entire tournament.

BFF4: Green Bracket Round 2

March 29, 2012

Voting for the first rounds has closed!

The Second round voting starts with the Green Bracket.

The first match up has the heavily favored #1 seed from Russian River Pliny the Younger which defeated Humulus Lager.  It will not have as easy a time with it’s Round 2 opponent, Dreadnaught IPA took down Pelican Mother of all Storms in Round 1 and looks to keep going strong. (more…)

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of March 25, 2012

March 26, 2012

I was in a craft beer bar recently when someone brought up the fact that this year we are already seeing summer brews hit the taps even though it has just turned the corner into spring.  What happened to all those quirky interpretations of the different versions of what a spring beer should be?  The light copper ales, floral IPA’s and crisp browns?  Just because it’s been a mild winter we’re all of sudden dismissing a whole season?  I’m all for the milder temperatures, however I’m not sure I’m ready to ditch a style that has just so recently begun diversifying itself.  Maybe this week’s beer events will contain some solutions…

The Final Bracket of the first round kicks off this Monday morning. Russian River Brewing Company a heavy presence in this bracket again with Pliny the Elder, Consecration, and Beatification.  There are plenty of other beer in this bracket to keep Russian River from claiming the spot in the Final Four.  We have the original version of Founders Breakfast Stout as well as Funky Buddha Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, and the first beer from Boston Beer Company in Samuel Adams Utopias.

BFF4: Red Bracket Round 1

March 24, 2012

The voting starts for the third installment of the first round today.  Today the Red Bracket opens and we find a couple repeat customers in this group of 16.  First we find another Three Floyds Dark Lord in this bracket.  This time it’s Vanilla Bean Aged and it’s the top seeded brew in this bracket. It finds itself up against another repeat beer with Cigar City’s Bourbon Barrel Aged Hunhapu’s Imperial Stout.

This bracket isn’t all repeat brews.  There are plenty of other strong contenders from this bracket come from other familiar breweries from this tournament with Hill Farmstead, Goose Island, and Russian River.

Great beers coming at us from this bracket.  Vote early and vote often!

Beer Review 106: Sixpoint Resin

March 16, 2012

Hello Beer Friend Nation!

In the Beer Friends constant effort to drink everything Sixpoint produces – we occasionally video tape ourselves doing it.  This week we tried the very sought after Resin, a Double IPA that was just announced as a year round brew from Sixpoint.  Sixpoint has always been known for doing killer stuff on draft and last year they started selling their stuff in Nanokegs.  This turned back the clock for the Beer Friends  and every new can or design was like diving into a new pack of baseball cards.  Be sure to check out our other Sixpoint reviews below the video.  Sixpoint! Double/Imperial! #Nanokegs!
