Beer Review 86: Sixpoint Autumnation

October 18, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

Well we reviewed the original Sixpoint four (Bengali Tiger, Righteous Rye, Crisp, Sweet Action) and now we move to the seasonals.  First up is Autumnation, a wet-hopped pumpkin spiced ale.  We cannot confirm if this uses a similar recipe as last years pumpkin ale from Sixpoint Pumpkin Brewster (best name ever) but we can confirm that they brew with hops, a lot of them.  Grab a can and check it out for yourself!  Sixpoint!  Five Cans!  Pumpkin!

Tuesday, October 18 – Harpoon Night @ The Pony Bar Manhattan:

We all get older.  Unlike beer most of us don’t get better with age.  Good thing we talk about beer here.  Harpoon is turning 25 this year and is celebrating with a year’s worth of birthday events.  They’ll be showing up with bells on and carrying kegs of Leviathan Series, 100 Barrel Series, seasonal brews and casks.  Peter Brod, Harpoon’s NYC man, will be on hand to walk you through their quarter decade collection.

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avenue on the Northwest Corner of 45th Street, Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan.

Tuesday, October 18 – Clown Shoes Brewery Kickoff @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

It seems like a new brewery is making its way into the New York market every week.  Well, let’s welcome a new one – Clown Shoes Brewery from Massachusetts.  This Ipswich breweries owner/brew Gregg Berman will be bringing an interesting selection with him and will be happy to share his passion with you.  Check out the list:

Clementine (Witbier), Eagle Claw Fist (American Strong), Brown Angel (Brown), Tramp Stamp IPA, Lubrication (Black IPA) and Muffin Top (Belgian Strong).

Saturday, October 22 – Richmond County Beer Festival @ Richmond County Bank Ballpark, Staten Island:

Tickets can be ordered on the SI Yankees Web site at SIYanks.com/beer with the code word: Beer.  You can also contact Tak at Richmond County Bank Ballpark, St. George, 718-313-1306 or by email attmihara@siyanks.com.

Hashtag Battles Week Six!

October 16, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

In the spirit of competition, Beer Friends would like to invite everyone to our NFL season hashtag battles! Using hashtagbattle.com we will pit two breweries against each other when their NFL counterparts are facing off on the gridiron. Are you ready for some football? And drinking? And #hashtag battle?!?!?!

What’s a hashtag battle? When you’re drinking a beer of a brewery competing in the battle (#stone vs #newbelgium), throw a #hashtag of the brewery and tweet it (or setup your foursquare or untappd to push to tweet and include the #hashtag) and we’ll use hashtagbattle.com to declare a winner after the Monday Night football game on ESPN. And because football needs beer, we’re starting on Saturday morning to include the brews consumed during College Football Saturdays. Support your team, support your beer, drink local and hashtag battle!

Hashtag Battle Week Five Matchup: Buffalo vs NY Giants (#southerntier vs #riverhorse)

Buffalo is the Darling of the NFL.  A great storyline with victories then a slight hiccup in week 4 but back on track in week 5 against the “Dream Team” (currently the 1-4 Eagles).  With the Jets struggling and currently owning the Tie-Breaker against the Patriots, can the Bills hold on to compete in the AFC East and turn the clock back to the 90′s?  Thurman Thomas where are you?!?!  Southern Tier is a big brewery producing quality brews.  In fact they are bring their quality brews down to the Pony Bar later in October.  Southern Tier is on the rise and the Buffalo Bills are on the rise again – all this sunshine might be enough to melt some of that year round snow in Upstate New York!

The Giants are always a question mark.  Living in New York you can never get the real story on ANYTHING going on with the teams.  A first week lost to NFC rival Washington and everyone is questioning Eli, three straight wins and “The Giants are going to the Superbowl!” and a loss (at home) to Seattle and Tom Coughlin has to go.  While the Giants and their media might be slightly bi-polar, the brewing at River Horse continues to impress.  River Horse has constantly impressed with the Beer Friends and helped us produce one of our favorite reviews ever.  Even recently the Beer Friends found a Hipp-O-Lantern aged in a Bourbon barrel that was dynamite! Maybe River Horse can up production, hand a few to the coaching staff and NY media and everyone can have a good time, until they lose again and then heads will roll…

New York City Craft Beer Events for the Week of October 9, 2011

October 11, 2011

Happy Columbus Day week!  In order to remember the man who discovered America, after the Native Americans and Vikings were already here, we suggest some craft beer related events.  While the Italian craft beer market hasn’t quite hit the US market in full force yet, there are quite a few American brews for you to drink.  And after all, he discovered America right?  We could probably trace the genealogy of American craft beer back to him.  And if it wasn’t such a terrible idea, we here at the Beer Friends probably still wouldn’t do it.

Tuesday, October 11 – McNeill’s Brewery Night @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

Half of the Beer Friends are from the northeast.  All of the Beer Friends love beer from Vermont.  Especially McNeill’s.  They’ll be pouring an impressive collection of their brews at Rattle n’ Hum tonight.  Check out the list:  Oktoberfest, Blond Bombshell, Firehouse, ESB, Pullmans, Old Ringworm and Warlord.

Rattle n’ Hum is located at 14 East 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

Wednesday, October 12 – Nebraska Tasting Night @ Good Beer, Manhattan:

The 2011 Winner of the Beer Friends Final Four is throwing a rare NYC tasting event.  Nebraska will be bringing the Brunette Nut Brown, American IPA, Cardinal West Coast Pale Ale and Hop God Belgian IPA to the Lower East Side’s Good Beer.  Hit em’ up for the best brew from the corn belt’s best brewery.

Good Beer is located at 422 9th Street between 1st Avenue and Avenue A, East Village, Manhattan.

Wednesday, October 12 – Rocky Mountain High @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan:

Even though everyone’s favorite John Denver song is really about West Virginia, we all realize his heart and home was Colorado.  The Pony Bar is paying homage to John this Wednesday by featuring the regular and the rare from Colorado’s best breweries.  Expect liquid deliciousness, including some first time pours, straight from Boulder, Left Hand, Breckenridge, Fort Collins, Oskar Blues, Great Divide, Flying Dog and Avery.  That’s a list that John would have found impressive.  That’s a list we here at the Beer Friends consider not-miss.

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avenue at 45th Street, Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan.

Thursday, October 13 – Brooklyn Brewery Draft Takeover @ Bierkraft, Brooklyn:

When a brewery comes as commonly available as Brooklyn Brewery is here in New York, it’s sometimes easy to take them for granted.  Forget their importance.  Well, they were the first, after a long dry spell, to bring brewing back to Brooklyn.  They have brewed classic brews in the England tradition and inspired creativity among the national American beer scene.  They’ll be taking over the draft lines at Bierkraft with all their best.  Check out the list:

Pilsner
Pennant Ale
Brown Ale
East India Pale Ale
Oktoberfest
Post Road Pumpkin Ale
Black Chocolate Stout 2008
Monster Ale 2007
Cookie Jar Porter
Blast
Cuvee Noire
Brown Ale Cask
East India Pale Ale Cask

Bierkraft is located at 191 5th Avenue between Berkeley and Union Streets, Park Slope, Brooklyn.
