Hello Beer Friends Nation!
Asking any Beer Friend what their favorite brewery is has proven to be a dangerous endeavor. Expect hours of conversation as the Beer Friend presents information and opines about the brewery and it’s beer, then retracts some of the more outlandish statements, and then may even pass out from beer conversation overload. Once he wakes up and has a coffee, ask what his top five are and you’ll be much better off. In this Beer Friends top five is Bristol Brewing Company in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Bristol is located in the shadow of Cheyenne Mountain on the south side of Colorado Springs where there is a general old town feeling – not saloons and gunslingers but no giant strip malls full of Bed Bath and Beyond and Wal-Mart. Bristol, like most Colorado breweries, has a neighborhood feel with everyone knowing each other and the one reason they came, good beer. Living in Colorado Springs I could always rely on Mass Transit as my go to beer, not available everywhere – but the places with a good beer selection. Laughing Lab is probably their most famous beer and featured in 300 Beers to Try before you Die by Roger Protz. On to the beers:
Laughing Lab is a Scottish Ale and winner of the Silver Medal in the 1996 World Beer Cup, and the Gold Medal is 2000 and 2006, Silver Medals in 1996, 2001, 2002, 2007 and Bronze medals in 1994 and 2005 in the Great American Beer Festival. A Scottish Ale with a deep red color, this 5.3 ABV beer has a smooth taste with a bite that reminds you of it’s beer style. Definitely a must have at Bristol Brewing Company.
Mass Transit is a sweeter Amber style ale with a combination of 4 different malts (Crystal, Carapils, Victory and Vienna). A easy go to beer thats smooth and easy to drink without a bite.
Compass IPA is India Pale Ale using a combination of three hops, Columbus, Chinook and Cascade.
Winter Warlock is an Oatmeal Stout that is perfect for the Colorado winter with snow falling outside the window or when you’re coming just off the slopes. Usually I don’t describe a beer like this but this beer is heavenly and I’m beginning to drool just thinking about it.
Here’s the part where I usually put in a small slideshow, but I was too busy drinking. Next time.
