Southern California (mini) Brewery Tour – Stone Brewing

by

Stone Brewing Company, Escondido, California

Stone Brewing Company has achieved success on the national scale – and their brewery shows it.  Their location is more a restaurant/bar than it is a brewery. They still do much of their brewing on site, but the brew floor is left mostly unseen.  The brew tanks are still located within the bar area, but they are far in the background.  The space inside is absolutely incredible, just not beer centered.  The space outside resembles a paradise garden, also not beer centered.  Overall I’d have to say the experience was incredible – the beer was good, the food was incredible and the setting was perfect for a Southern California, summer evening.  It just didn’t feel like a brewery.  But that’s okay.

For beer they serve a range of California favorites – from Sierra Nevada to Firestone Walker.  Many of the Stone brews we’ve had before, as they are no strangers to the New York area – so we ended up trying a couple that weren’t from Stone.

Stone Cali-Belgique – Deliciously hoppy with a Belgian twist that doesn’t overpower the hops, but rather adds another delicious flavor to savor.  Stone definitely knows how to use hops and they do it here.  It’s impressive when you put down a pint with tastes of citrus, pine and Belgian yeast – the brewer must really know what he’s doing!

Sierra Nevada Ovila Saison -Sierra Nevada does it again with this one! The temperature of the day demanded something refreshing – a Belgian Saison did the trick.  Slightly hoppy and easy to drink with a nice herbal farmhouse taste.  Perfect alongside the Spicy Beef and Broccoli Stir Fry I had for dinner.

Cali-Belgique!

Outside dining area.

Bar area with tanks way in the background.

The Stone! (Actually one of many...)
