Beer Review 71: Cider Comparison

June 28, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

Today the Beer Friends tried out a few Hard Apple Cider’s in response to last weeks Hard Apple Cider event.  We may know beer, but (honestly) know very little about ciders.  We grabbed bottles of Doc’s Draft Hard Cider and J.K. Scrumpy’s Hard Cider to compare and see how we liked them.

Summer feels like it’s been here for quite a bit now, at least if you live in the Big Apple. However, if you get summer perks like Summer Friday’s or summer’s off (damn teachers!) then you have a whole lot of newly freed up time on your hands. You may be pondering, asking yourself – what is the best way to spend this new free time!?!? By now you should know where I’m going with this.  Honestly, it should be an obvious decision – spend it on beer! Craft beer, brewing, going to events, and becoming an expert on America’s favorite beverage. And I think I can help you out with the events.

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

We like Colorado beers, can you tell?  I’ve always been a bit transparent but I feel I was lucky to grow up in a great state for beer – and I love finding them out in NYC.  We’ve conquered a few Boulder Beers before (and here) and today we complete the trifecta! Boulder! Beer! Company!

Tuesday, June 20 – Goose Night! @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

Goose Island has been quite the hot topic recently in craft beer world news – getting bought out by Anheuser-Busch, their old brewmaster leaving for maybe not greener, but different pastures and bringing in a new brewmaster from the west-coast.  People, rightfully so, wondered if their quality brew would continue to taste the same.  Well, Tuesday is the time to find out.  About two months after all these changes rapidly took place they bringing their most popular and rarest pours to Rattle n’ Hum.  We’re talking about much more than just the IPA, Honker’s Ale and 312 Wheat.  We’re talking Sofie, Matilda, Pere Jacques, Bourbon County Stout, Bourbon County Vanilla Aged Stout, Scully, Minx, Samovar, Big John, Raspberry Saison, Fleur, Dominique, Indira, Demolition, Lolita and American Brown.
Some said that getting bought out by Anheuser-Busch would limit their craft production.  Look that way to you?

Rattle n’ Hum is located at East 33rd Street between Madison and 5th Avenues, Midtown, Manhattan.

June 13, 2011

I had a feeling.  And not just the usual feelings, but the awesome feelings.  The sort of feelings that let you know this is going to be a big week.  A HUGE week.  Seriously though, the closest example I would give for the events happening this week would be a planetary alignment with the center of the galaxy.  It wasn’t organized by anything beyond cosmic happenstance but despite it’s coincidental nature, it’s pretty damn awesome.  Well, this week you can thank The Beer Friends for taking the random alignment of super-awesome craft beer events and organizing them into a coherent list of what you should drink and where you should drink it.  Let’s see what we’ve got…

Tuesday, June 14 – The Good Beer Seal 2011 Awards Party @ Barcade, Brooklyn:

Ever had the urge to share your opinion regarding all things craft beer in the New York City metro area?  But didn’t feel like being as verbose as creating a blog on the internet?  Now here at The Beer Friends we don’t really know about such things.  However, we do know about a more concise method of expressing your expert craft beer opinions.  And it’s happening this week.

Beer Review 68: Sixpoint Sweet Action

June 7, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

This week we return to the very new, very happening Sixpoint in four pack cans!  In the second part of our 4 part series we try Sweet Action, Sixpoint’s flagship beer.  After two weeks of having Sixpoint nanokegs (their definition – we’re not smart/funny enough to come up with that) in our fridge – we are finally over the novelty (not really) of it and can make a honest review (yeah right!).  Tallboys!  Series of beer drinking!  Redhook!

*********************** NEW ADDITION***********************

Tuesday, June 7 – Bluepoint Brewery Night @ The Pony Bar, Manhattan:

Patchogue, Long Island has long been known as Long Island’s brewing capital, and for one reason:  Bluepoint Brewery.  The Toasted Lager has been a downstate New York tradition since the earlier part of the decade and they’ve only improved their brews since then.  The Pony Bar will be hosting the brewery and their beer expert Steve Bayconich who will be bringing some of Blue Point’s rarest brews on Tuesday night.  The Beer Friends will be heading over after our weekly meeting and we hope to see you there!

The Pony Bar is located at 637 10th Avnue on the northwest corner of 45th street, Hell’s Kitchen, Manhattan.

Tuesday, June 7 – The Big LeBrewski Beer Series Part 1 @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:

I had to include this event in the newsletter just because of the name.  Hilarious.  And who doesn’t love the Big Lebowski or anything in tribute to it.  Okay, it’s not just the name.  Turns out the beer is pretty amazing too.  Check out the list:

Beer Review 67: Cape Cod Beer Red

June 1, 2011

Hello Beer Friends Nation!

This week we reviewed the Runner Up of the Beer Friend Final Four (BFF4) – Cape Cod Red.  With a very small distribution area, Cape Cod Beer had huge fan support and took Nebraska Brewing Company down to the wire.  Win or lose Cape Cod Beer is a fantastic brewery in Hyannis and a favorite when ever these Beer Friends get their hands on it.  Cape Cod!  Red!  Delicious! Beer!
