After an exciting first two rounds, the strong have survived. These are the premier beers of the tournament. We have strong winners in Great Divide’s Yeti Imperial Stout and last years winner, Fat Tire getting knocked off by first year Breckenridge Breweries 471 Small Batch Double IPA. Polls close on April 4th, so get out there, vote and spread the word! (more…)
The six pack of the week (SPotW) was featured as the #4 seed in the Northeast Bracket of this years BFF4. This is a classic IPA from Smuttynose, a stop on the original Beer Friends New England Brewery Tour back in 2009. This is a favorite of one Beer Friend (watch the video to find out) but enjoyed by all. Will the endorsement of the Beer Friends pull Smuttynose into the third round? We’ll have to wait and see!
Round one is over and it was exciting! We were lacking a bit in the upset department with our only low-seeded brew that showed up to play being Captain Lawrence Liquid Gold. Despite that, no victories were even close to being one-sided with the largest margin of victory actually occurring in Captain Lawrence’s Liquid Gold’s upset of Sam Adam’s Noble Pils. Is this Liquid Gold’s way of letting the beer world know that they are here to play for the BFF4 championship? Will Switchback’s Unfiltered Amber continue winning in their first ever tournament appearance? Will Sixpoint’s #1 seeded Bengali Tiger take what many consider to be their tournament to lose this year? Let’s see what happens in Round Two of the Northeast Region! (more…)
It’s the last week in March and it feels like nature is playing a cruel April Fools joke on us. Hey, here’s an 80 degree day to inagurate the coming of spring…NOT! BOOM! 25 degrees and snowing! I swear, last week you could look up at the sky and see mother nature flicking you off with middle finger shaped clouds that simultaneously raining a “wintry-mix” down on us. Jerk. Well, this week is when April Fools Day actually happens. My prediction? Starts off sunny and 70 end up 20 and hailstorms the size of golf balls. Just make sure you’re drinking your craft brews indoor. (more…)
Second round! but first….RECAP! No real first round surprises here: Torpedo came out on top of Fire Rock Pale ale, not shocker for the 1 Seed. Deschutes Black Butte put in a good fight against Hop Stoopid, only being bested in the last minute by 1. Despite my personal prejudice Collaboration Saison won out against the Widmer Bros Drop Top, and Stone’s Arrogant Bastard came out ahead of Anchor’s Christmas Ale. Sierra Nevada Estate Ale bested the higher seated Dos Equis Amber and Rogue’s Shakespeare Stout won the battle against Green Flash’s West Coast IPA. Finishing out the first round Kona Pipeling Porter beat it’s California cousin Lagunitas Censored Red.
For our first match we have 1 vs 8 Sierra Nevada Torpedo against Lagunitas Hop Stoopid. The first of our possible Super Hopped rounds, this one will come down to which of these has the better set of hops to beat up your taste buds! (more…)
Upset special! The first round of this bracket was a lot tighter than I thought it would be. Yards had a good show against against Flying Dog but ultimately lost out. However, Stoudt’s took it to the favored Victory Prima Pils and snuck through to the second round. Also, The brewery from Tampa came in and beat the #1 seed Nugget Nectar. It was a good show by Troegs on this one, forcing a tie and overtime against Cigar city, but it seems Cigar City was a bit underrated at a #16th seed… we will obviously have to recalibrate the computers at BF HQ for next year’s bracket.
Dreams are broken and the strong move on… who ever thought the Rocky Mountain IPA had a chance against Breakfast Stout or (the biggest upset) Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout over Bristol’s Laughing Lab, not to worry Bristol fans – Mass Transit pulled through over the strong year-round available Founder’s Porter. Can Yeti continue it’s run? can Bell’s pull through as the two seed continuing to a 1 vs 2 match-up? Vote and decide!
The 1 vs 8 match up has last year’s winner Fat Tire advancing to play 471 Small Batch IPA from Breckenridge Brewery. This is Breckenridge’s first year in the BFF4 and they had a strong showing… can they be a Butler and bring down the #1 seed?
During our weekly beer reviews we have a lot of conversations that don’t make the cut. Most of which I pass right over… but this conversation was too brilliant to be held back from the world. Just a little insight into the behind the scenes at the Beer Friends…
Welcome to the Northeast Regional! Beer brewing in America started here in the Northeast with the Founding Fathers and we continue their steadfast tradition to this day. There are some heavy hitters and fan favorites coming out of the Northeast this year, however even with the seeding there is no clear favorite. Could it be Brooklyn Breweries Pennant Ale? Or Vermont’s homestate hero – Longtrail Hibernator. Will the underdogs from Cisco or Bluepoint provide us with some upsets? Can first timer Switchback Amber make a showing? You decide! As the Founding Fathers used to say: Vote early and vote often!
Sixpoint’s Bengali Tiger is brings tough competition for Cisco Brewery’s Whale’s Tale. A crisp, refreshing, citrusy IPA out of Brooklyn verse an English style, balanced Pale Ale. Will the #1 seed of the Northeast ease their way into the second round? (more…)
