You know what would be awesome? Tickets to an exclusive Sixpoint Dinner on Monday night where the chef’s at Jimmy’s No. 43 work tirelessly to create dishes that pair perfectly with two new pours from our favorite Red Hook Brewers – Sixpoint Craft Ales! Well, they’re sold out. Completely. Sorry guys. But since you (and us) love Sixpoint so much and Jimmy’s No. 43 knows this, they are making this Tuesdays $10 Tastings a Sixpoint feature. Come try a few Sixpoint pours including…Time Out Porter – an English and American hybrid porter. Sounds delicious. Thanks Jimmy’s No. 43 for remembering those of us who love Sixpoint, but didn’t get tickets to your awesome Monday night dinner.
Jimmy’s No. 43 is located at 43 E 7th Street between 2nd and 3rd Avenues, East Village, Manhattan.
Tuesday, March 1st – Cigar City Night @ Rattle n’ Hum, Manhattan:
One of the Beer Friends has recently been to the Tampa Area and unfortunately missed out on visiting the Cigar City brewery. To make up for that Beer Friends unforgivable mistake, Rattle n’ Hum will be hosting quite a list of taps this Tuesday night. Probably exclusively for the purpose of righting this Beer Friends transgressions. Seriously though, check out this list:
Its a web-based recipe calculator that allows you to tweak all of your homebrew’s parameters all the while estimating the final color and taste! The best part is after tweaking everything on the fly to get that perfect virtual brew with all your hops and malts and what not, it helps calculate the boil times, fermentation period and bottle conditioning times.
A great help for anyone looking to streamline their process.
Return of the Live blog! It must be a awesome event to bring the Beer Friends out of the hibernation holes… Sixpoint at Barcade!
Brad’s 1st – Oyster Stout on Nitro Pour – this is a smooth pour, granted I can’t tell whether or not it’s the brew or the nitro pour effect. This is exactly what a Oyster Stout from Sixpoint would taste like – a high quality Oyster Stout – the perfect example of the style.
Phil’s 1st – Black Coffee IPA – a very good dark IPA that Sixpoint has brewed with his Beer Friend’s hometown coffee house Stumptown Roasters. Very smooth, very bitter – just like a good cup of coffee. The coffee definitely over powers the hops, they’re in the somewhere, hiding around the end of the taste, but it doesn’t take away from how good it is. A keeper in my book.
Who’s up for a field trip? I can only assume everyone is raising their hands so I won’t count individuals – so grab that Metrocard, take a train to 14th Street and wait with all the hipsters to head to Williamsburg! Barcade is having a massive Sixpoint Brewery night and the list looks impressive. First to find the Beer Friends gets a beer on us!
Even to veterans of sixpoint events like us, this event doesn’t look like it will disappoint. Look at some of the beers on the list:
Black Coffee IPA? As an IPA and coffee lover, this one tops my list. They will also have the Mad Scientist #1 and #2. #1 being a Spelt Wine and being delicious, I encourage you all to try this one. #2 being a “Beserker Bock” brewed with Stumptown coffee. (coffee may be a theme for this beer friend tonight)
Sixpoint also excells at tweaking their already delicious beers to create some special concoctions.
Diesel dry hopped on Cask? I think this one speaks for itself.
Saison Apollo? Their Apollo wheat with Saison yeast – should be a interesting awesome night. See you there!
The Breckenridge Brewery is a favorite of Colorado folks with a few locations all over the state. While the Original Brewery and Pub is located on South Main Street in Breckenridge, they have a location on Blake St. Denver across from Coors Field, a BBQ joint and brewpub in Denver, and a Ale House in Grand Junction. Known for delicious beers, Breckenridge has a firm foothold in the brewery rich Colorado beer scene and doesn’t look to be letting up any time soon. On the recent Beer Friends Colorado Brewery tour we visited the Blake Street location to try a few beers and chat up a few bartenders.
A few details on the beers:
Avalanche Ale is one of their most popular beers and for good reason, this amber ale gives the famous Fat Tire a run for it’s money in the amber scene across Colorado. While Fat Tire is more readily available, strike up a conversation about Avalanche Ale with a bartender and prepare yourself for a detailed argument.
This SPotW is another combination of two bombers of Dogfish Head‘s Bitches Brew. Sony re-released Miles Davis iconic album, Bitches Brew and Dogfish Head made a beer to capture the spirit of jazz infusion. Three parts imperial stout and one part African honey-like beer makes for a interesting mixture, much like the album – also listen closely for “Bitches Brew” in the background playing from the album of the same name. Jazz! Beer! Limited release! (So get some!)
When it comes to the Beer Friends, we love America. It’s most important ideals are represented everywhere in the craft beer world: liberty, industriousness, creativity and pursuit of happiness. It’s no surprise that the people who penned these ideals, our Founding Fathers, were craft brewers themselves. Not only were they forming the world’s most famous democracy they were doing it while enjoying a pint of their own home brewed porters, stouts and pale ales. Let’s celebrate their ingenuity by drinking the most prized of their creations: craft beer.
Imperial doesn’t quite go well with the Founding Fathers and early America. It does however go well with, well, everything else. Expect Imperial IPA’s, Souts, Porters, Pilsners and more. Imperial might not be good for democracy, but it goes great with about every style of brew.

Boom goes the Dynamite! and another month of Daily Beer Calendar polls and results… This last round takes us into March – which means the Second Annual BFFF! Stay tuned for details!
Today’s Six Pack of the Week isn’t a sixer at all, it’s a bomber of Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas Brewing Company in Petaluma, California. This is described as a hops lovers dream, but having a few Hop-Heads in the group we’ll see how this stacks up! Also check out the other brews from Lagunitas that the Beer Friends have reviewed… perfect for the V-Day hangover…
